Bank holiday waste collections
As with every bank holiday, there will be changes to the normal waste collections. May Wednesday Walk
It was lovely to have so many walkers, nineteen! on the April walk.  Attached are some photos to remind you of that sunny walk up the newly cleared Hardwell Lane and Ridgeway.
Our May walk will be on Wed 3rd, meeting as always at Uffington village hall car park at 9:30. The walk starts at Letcombe Regis so we hope to arrange car shares on the morning. Please bring your car along if you are happy to share. Geoff Rumble is kindly leading this walk which heads out along a path above the Letcombe Bassett road and then up fields to the Ridgeway, on to Segsbury Castle and  back down to Letcombe Regis. It is about three and a half miles / five kilometres. There are some nice views from the top and we pass a few interesting properties en route. Hope to see lots of you there.

Trees
The Parish Council commissioned a survey of all the trees which it owns in the village – mainly on the Jubilee Field / pond area and also in Craven Common – something like 300 mature trees in all!  The result is a comprehensive and very useful report which will serve as a valuable management tool for many years.    The report identified some urgent work; this will commence on 4 May, to remove a small number of dangerous trees on the Jubilee Field and to crown clean and cut back the lime in Craven Common to clear the street light.
The trimmings will be mulched and left around the base of other trees for protection and fertilisation; usable wood will be stacked and left as wild life refuges, but may be removed if wanted as firewood. If you do this, please leave the heaps tidy.

Uffington Community Café
Café will be open every Saturday from 11 am. Please support us as often as you can.
Snacks, cakes, bakes, gluten-free. Also, free fruit for kiddies.

Give Blood!
96% of us rely on the other 4% to give blood - don't leave it to someone else. If you're generally healthy and aged between 17 and 65, you can probably donate. The next donation session at The Beacon, Wantage is on Thursday, 11th May between 13.15-15.30 & 16.15-19.15.

Zumba Gold in Uffington
 
Age UK Oxfordshire / Generation Games run a Zumba Gold exercise session in Uffington on Thursdays from 2 to 3.00 pm. It started out to be quite popular but recently numbers of participants have declined. St George's Day at The Teapot Tearoom

Come along and be proud to wear your England Cricket, Rugby, Football or Wimbledon shirt, wave your England flag or just relax with a cuppa and soak up the atmosphere.  Prizes for the best dressed tearoom patron presented at 4pm.

The history of St George's Day:

  • In 1222 the Council of Oxford declared April 23rd to be St George's Day.
  • In 1348 St George became the Patron Saint of England.
  • In 1415, St George's Day was declared a national feast day and holiday in England.
  • Traditional customs were to fly the St George's flag and wear a red rose in one's lapel.
  • The hymn 'Jerusalem' was also sung on the 23rd April, or the nearest Sunday, in churches across the nation.
  • However, after the union with Scotland at the end of the 18th Century, the tradition diminished and since then has not been widely acknowledged and is no longer a national holiday.

Pilates in Uffington

Ridgeway Friends Day 23 April – THMH Uffington
A reminder of the Ridgeway Friends Day on 23 April – this will be of interest to all those who value the Ridgeway - its landscape, history and natural history. It will include the AGM for the Friends of the Ridgeway but also a wider range of activities, including the Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize Exhibition and Prize giving. Uffington Tennis Club's junior coaching program

From the Police
Wonga has confirmed a data breach where up to 250,000 accounts have been compromised. The incident is now being investigated by the police and has been reported to the Financial Conduct Authority.

Wonga has updated their website with further information: https://www.wonga.com/help/incident-faq
and confirmed that they are contacting all those affected and are taking steps to protect them, but there are also some things you can do to keep your information secure.
 
Here's what you can do to make yourself safer:
If any of your financial details are compromised, notify your bank or card company as soon as possible. Review your financial statements regularly for any unusual activity. Criminals can use personal data obtained from a data breach to commit identity fraud. Consider using credit reference agencies, such as Experian or Equifax, to regularly monitor your credit file for unusual activity.

Be suspicious of any unsolicited calls, emails or texts, even if it appears to be from a company you know of. Don't open the attachments or click on links within unsolicited emails, and never disclose any personal or financial details during a cold call. If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, please report it to us: http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud
