Uffington Community Café
The Cafe will just be open from 10.30 till 12.30 this Saturday, to allow time to set up for the ABBA event. All tickets have now been sold. Saturday's Cafe will sadly be the last one. I have really enjoyed running it, meeting many people along the way. A big Thank You to the lovely customers that visited every week. I appreciated your support and friendship. I will miss you. Launch Of New Victims First Service
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley has today launched "Victims First" as a new service for victims in the Thames Valley who are struggling to cope with the impact of a crime . Victims First is available across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire and provides free tailored emotional and therapeutic support to all victims and witnesses of crime, as well as family members of victims (if they require it).
The service allows for one front door for all victims in the Thames Valley who require support and is available regardless of:
• Crime type
• Whether or not the crime has been reported to the police
• Whether they were a victim of a recent or historic crime
• Wherever the crime happened.

Learn How to Keep Your Child Safe Online Workshop
Parents of young children in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse can sign up for a free session about how to keep their child safe online. On Tuesday 3 July, e-safety experts Computing Champions will be visiting Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot to advise parents on the dangers of a variety of technologies in the home, and talk to them about how to make their child 'share aware', preventing access to inappropriate content, appropriate use of social media and safe online gaming. There are two sessions available, at 5pm or 6pm. Spaces are limited so book now to guarantee a space book.

Watch Out For Fake Texts About Your EE Bill
These fake text messages purport to be from EE and claim that you haven't paid a bill. The link in the message leads to a phishing website designed to pay a bill. The link in the message leads to a phishing website designed to steal your EE account login details, as well as personal & financial information. Don't be tricked into giving a fraudster access to your personal or financial details. Never automatically click on a link or attachment in an unexpected email or text. Courier Fraud
The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has identified an increasing number of reports submitted to Action Fraud from the public concerning courier fraud.
Fraudsters are contacting victims by telephone and purporting to be a police officer or bank official. To substantiate this claim, the caller might be able to confirm some easily obtainable basic details about the victim such as their full name and address. They may also offer a telephone number for the victim to call to check that they are genuine; this number is not genuine and simply redirects to the fraudster who pretends to be a different person. After some trust has been established, the fraudster will then, for example, suggest;
- Some money has been removed from a victim's bank account and staff at their local bank branch are responsible.
- Suspects have already been arrested but the "police" need money for evidence.
- A business such as a jewellers or currency exchange is operating fraudulently and they require assistance to help secure evidence.
Victims are then asked to cooperate in an investigation by attending their bank and withdrawing money, withdrawing foreign currency from an exchange or purchasing an expensive item to hand over to a courier for examination who will also be a fraudster. Again, to reassure the victim, a safe word might be communicated to the victim so the courier appears genuine. At the time of handover, unsuspecting victims are promised the money they've handed over or spent will be reimbursed but in reality there is no further contact and
the money is never seen again. Protect Yourself:

Phone and ask you for your PIN or full banking password, or ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping, or send someone to your home to collect cash, PIN, cards or cheque books if you are a victim of fraud.
Don't assume an email or phone call is authentic
Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address or even your mother's maiden name), it doesn't mean they are genuine. Be mindful of who you trust – criminals may try and trick you into their confidence by telling you that you've been a victim of fraud.
Stay in control
If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. Have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information.

Village news 15 June 2018 White Horse Show 2018 - Important Information
After the success of last year's show which raised £40,000 for the benefit of the three parishes of Baulking, Uffington and Woolstone, we are now fully immersed in the plans for this year. Held over the August Bank Holiday weekend (Sunday 26th and Monday 27th) we are always in need of extra help whether in the lead-up or over the weekend. Whether you can give an hour of your time or can join our organising committee which meets once a month (next meeting is Thursday 21st June - 7.30 at the Uffington Sports Club off Fawler Road) please do make contact. We are all volunteers with most of us living in the three villages.
Also, don't forget that as a resident of any of these villages you can apply to the White Horse Show Trust for a grant from the money we raise. Over £500,000 has been raised by the Show during the last 40 or so years all of which has been given to a wide range of clubs, groups, buildings etc. for the benefit of those living in the villages.

Speeding in Uffington
This is an update of the earlier message on this subject. Sometimes we hear that speeding is thought to be a problem in the village. Watchfield Parish Council has said that they could loan their Speedwatch equipment to Uffington, with no charge for the time being. This is a radar device which is operated by volunteers and records the speed of passing vehicles; if they are exceeding the speed limit, a letter will be written to the owner by the Police.
A training session has been set up by Faringdon Neighbourhood Police for 1900 hrs on Sunday 17 June (this Sunday) at Faringdon Police Station. There are currently two volunteers signed up, but there is space for more. If you would like to join in, please let me know asap. Further training sessions can probably be arranged if you are interested but not available on Sunday.

Volunteers Week. Have you ever considered volunteering with us? It's National Volunteers' Week and we are celebrating the work of our volunteers. We have over 500 Police Support Volunteers, over 400 Special Constables and over 200 cadets. By working with us and our partners, these volunteers help keep Thames Valley safe.
We currently have a number of opportunities for enthusiastic volunteers to assist in the running of our Cadet Units across Thames Valley. Cadet Leaders help young people to develop their skills and confidence alongside supporting a wide range of activities and events in the local community. Anyone over 18 is eligible to apply and you need to be able to commit to one evening a week, with some additional hours when required. Burglary Team Op Monitor
Tackling dwelling burglary remains a priority for Thames Valley Police. We fully recognise the traumatic effect that these offences can have on victims and the impact on the wider community. Operation Monitor commenced on the 1st of June and is South and Vales response to this type of crime; for the next four months there will be a dedicated team based at Abingdon Police station with a focus on burglary.
'Lovely weather…………….for Burglars!' We've all been enjoying the sunshine recently, but with the nice weather comes opportunities for thieves. Did you know that a large number of burglaries reported to us have no signs of a forced entry? Many burglars target homes with open doors and windows during the summer months, they rely on people forgetting to lock doors or windows that have been left open during the day for ventilation. The Op Monitor team is working hard to reduce burglary and to target and convict the callous criminals who commit this type of crime.
