WHAT'S ON - IN & AROUND UFFINGTON
Uffington Wed Walk - Wed 3 Sept. Longcot to Faringdon with, unusually, an 8:50 start. Ten years ago, a walk route "The Vale Way" was devised by the Vale Ramblers from Faringdon to Abingdon, which can be done in five stages.
For our September Walk we plan to walk the first stretch from Longcot to Faringdon, catching the 68 bus back to Longcot. So if you have a bus pass bring it along. Because it is important to arrive at Faringdon in plenty of time for the 11:30 bus back to Longcot, we will leave Uffington earlier than usual at 9:00 am. For those of you who would prefer to go straight to the start point in Longcot the meeting place will be The Green opposite the School, please park considerately in the village. The walk will start from Longcot at 9:15 and is 4.02 miles. Meeting at Uffington Village Hall car park at 8:50 for car sharing and a 9:00 start.

Two shows at St Nicholas Church, Baulking: - 25 September - Malin Lewis
- 3rd October - Heather Ferrier Trio
These shows will be the last at the church for a while and will feature 2 of the finest groups of up and coming acoustic musicians in the UK. - Malin Lewis is a musician, composer, instrument maker and educator who grew up in Moidart and Skye in the north west of Scotland. Malin plays bagpipes, fiddle and whistle and is well versed in the west coast piping traditions. Described by Radio 4's Front Row as a rising star, by Radio 3 as a cutting edge creator and as "the future of Scottish folk" by The Wire magazine. Malin will be performing in Baulking with revered Scandinavian musician Marit Falt who is steeped in both Scandinavian folk and Scottish traditional music. She has performed as a solo artist and as part of a group but for this show this pair of fine musicians will be combining for an evening of hair tingling, dance inducing melodies from European and Scottish folk traditions.
- Just a week later on October 3rd we are delighted to present superb accordion player and clog dancer Heather Ferrier and her trio. Heather has her own sound that combines folk with all manner of other styles. She performs with Alasdair Paul on guitar and Adam Stapleford on drums and on stage the trio play music that has been described as an explosion of groove and melody. Heather has performed across the UK and Europe and, more locally, was the support for Spiers and Boden at their Didcot Cornerstone show earlier this year. Tom Robinson on BBC 6 Music described her as an accordion virtuoso so you get all this .....and clog dancing!
Tickets for each show are £17 each but if you would like to do both we can do them for the combined price of £30 - that saves you the price of a drink.

Planning Applications.
The council has approved a planning application, reference P25/V0908/LB, for development work at the following location: Little Thatch Broad Street Uffington Faringdon. The application is for: Extend chimney height to a minimum of 180cm as recommended by HETAS. This is the chimney which serves the wood burner and open fireplace. Books at the Barn - Eastmanton House, Sparsholt. Two events we have coming up at the beginning of October at the barn at Eastmanton House, Sparsholt, Wantage OX12 9PJ are: - Thursday 2nd October. One is an author talk on Thursday 2nd October at 7.30pm with Christina Lamb, Chief Foreign Correspondent to the Sunday Times who will be discussing her much publicised book, Our Bodies, Their Battlefields. Not for the faint hearted but a wake up call to the world's most neglected war crime - there is actually an exhibition on about it at the Imperial War Museum at the moment. - Friday 3rd October. Illustrated with recordings and intriguing anecdotes, this talk is a must for all who would like to know more of the Conductor's Art! Proceeds will be split between the White Horse Festival and The Rood Project, Sparsholt Church's Restoration Project. What to do if you hit a deer. As we approach deer rutting season (September to November), the number of deer involved in vehicle collisions on our roads increases dramatically. If you find yourself in a collision with a deer, please take the following steps:
1. Ensure your safety. Pull over to a safe location away from traffic and turn on your hazard lights.
2. Assess the situation. Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call for an ambulance immediately.
3. Call 999. Call the police on 999 to report the accident. They will handle the situation with the deer and can provide assistance if needed. Injured deer can be both unpredictable and volatile, and can cause further risk and harm to other road users.
4. Do not approach the deer. Injured deer can be dangerous, so avoid getting close to it/them.

Benefit Scam alert from Trading Standards. Oxfordshire Trading Standards have asked for this message to be passed on.
Please be aware of cold callers claiming to work with the DWP or other similar agencies. The DWP or any legitimate agency will never charge for benefit advice or request payment before helping with claims. If you receive a suspicious call, independently contact the DWP or the relevant agency using an official telephone number – do not use numbers given to you by the cold caller. Wait at least 15 minutes before making the call as fraudsters may keep the line open and respond claiming to be the DWP or agency you are telephoning.
NEVER disclose any personal or sensitive information over the telephone. Common methods of communication include telephone calls, text messages of emails that mimic official DWP correspondence. Often these communications will: - Inform you that payments are at risk unless you provide details such as bank details or national insurance number.
- Offer to apply for benefits on your behalf for an upfront fee
- Impersonate DWP staff to gain your trust and collect sensitive information.
If you suspect you have made a payment in response to such a scam call, immediately contact your bank and dial 159; the operator will direct your call appropriately.
