Next week's June Walk – Wednesday 1 June. Circular Walk via Britchcombe Farm and Kingston Lisle. This month Pamela Preene will be showing the way for a local circular walk heading up to Britchcombe Farm from Uffington Village Hall. Then heading East on The Ridgeway and down towards Fawler via Kingston Lisle and back via the fields to the starting point. Just over five miles, do bring along drinks or snacks if you would like to, for a short break half way round.
Starting time 9:20 for 9:30 start at Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington SN7 7RE. Weather forecast: Perfect walking weather - Sunny intervals and a light breeze 16/17 degrees.

Speeding in the village.
It was reported at the recent Parish Council meeting that there had been a number of social media comments about speeding, following the death of a pet on White Horse, and calls for speed reduction measures.
The Parish Council has been discussing two such measures in recent months; they are: - Adoption of a 20-mph speed limit in the village. This is an OCC initiative and it is not clear what the costs or the extent of a new limit might be, but if you have any views, for or against, please pass them to any member of the Parish Council or to the Clerk, at: uffingtonpc.clerk@gmail.com
- Speedwatch. The new Speedwatch initiative involves local volunteers and has, in the past, been effective at identifying speeding. We need a few more volunteers, in addition to those already on the list. If you would like to volunteer, please email: simon.jenkins@uffington.net
Bus Shelter. Those passing the bus shelter on the junction of White Horse and Station Road in recent days will have found it difficult to miss some unsightly sheets of polythene. The broken pane of glass will be replaced shortly.
The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Weekend
The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, marking her 70th year in service, will honour Her Majesty with an extended bank holiday next week. The Queen's coronation took place on June 2, 1953, at Westminster Abbey in London. The major Platinum Jubilee celebrations will therefore begin on Thursday June 2 and will continue over the weekend until Sunday 5th June. We are aware of the following events planned for Uffington: - Tom Brown's School Museum. The museum will be open on all four days, from 2.00 to 5.00 pm. This year's exhibition is called 'Village Celebrations' with a history of village celebrations in the last 100 years.
- Thursday 2 June. The National Trust beacon fire up on White Horse Hill will be lit at 9.45 pm, in the field adjacent to the main car park.
- Sunday 5 June:

A plaque to commemorate the planting of new trees on the Jubilee Field will be unveiled on Sunday. The Queen's Green Canopy is a unique, UK-wide tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee in 2022, by inviting people to "Plant a Tree for the Jubilee." Fawler Road closure - Jubilee weekend. We are having a Jubilee picnic in Fawler on Sunday 5th June and as such have been granted a road closure from 1000 - 1500. I do not think the Council will be posting signage but we will block the road with bales at either end.

You may know that I have been trying to find alternative transport and have worked through a number of options with officers and other parties. I think it is time to meet to let you all know what I've found out, and try to agree between you which is the best solution . . .

Ofgem Scam Emails. Action Fraud has received 752 reports in four days relating to fake emails purporting to be from Ofgem. The emails state that the recipient is eligible for a rebate as a result of a newly announced government scheme. The links in the emails lead to genuine-looking websites that are designed to steal your personal and financial information. - Remember, your bank, or any other official organisation, won't ask you to share personal information over email or text. If you need to check that it's a genuine message, contact the company using details from their official website or app.

Queen's Platinum Jubilee Weekend
The National Trust have confirmed there will be a beacon fire up on White Horse Hill on Thursday the 2nd of June. We will be lighting it in accordance with the Pageant master's instructions at 9.45pm and so will not be dependent upon sighting other beacons locally.
The fire itself will be placed about 50 metres away from the main car park in the field adjacent to it. It will be roped off and marshalled for obvious reasons. It will consist of quick burning materials like wooden pallets and fencing panels to give a whoosh and then die down quickly it is hoped. It will be placed on a pre dug fire pit to safeguard the grass underneath. The NT are seeking help from the parish if possible for: - Help to dig the fire pit, during the afternoon of Wednesday 1 June; about 6 people are needed. - Provide any pallets and panels, although we don't want to be inundated with clutter!

Kanda Bongo Man, Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington, Friday 10th June.
Our next show will be the much anticipated, and postponed, return of the African superstar Kanda Bongo Man. Nothing is going to stop it this time. The hall will be fully ventilated, the bar will be serving drinks (cash only) and I have arranged a balmy evening weatherwise.
A wise man once said " If Kanda Bongo Man doesn't make you dance then you are probably dead" and this will be a rare chance to see him in front of a couple of hundred people before his main stage appearance a few weeks later at WOMAD in front of several thousand. If you want to leave the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall with a smile on your face like a crescent moon then we will see you on the 10th of June.

Thames Valley Police Taking Part in National Firearms Surrender. Thames Valley Police is appealing to the public to hand in any unwanted, unlicensed or illegal guns during a national surrender of firearms and ammunition. The surrender, which starts on Thursday 12th May and will run until Sunday 29th May, is coordinated by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) and supported by police forces.

Theft from Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention. With the weather getting warmer more people are visiting our local beauty spots. If you visit by car, please take precautions and make sure that all valuables are hidden and not left on display, even better please refrain from taking them or keep them on your person whilst visiting.
We have had recent reported thefts from vehicles around Ashdown House and Hungerford National Trust sites. So, if visiting here please be extra vigilant. If you have been the victim of crime, please report in an emergency via 999 or if a non-emergency via 101 or the Thames Valley Police Website.
