Maurice "Mo" Dickson, St Nicholas Church, Baulking, Saturday 25th July. Our penultimate show of the year features Lisburn, Co. Antrim's favourite son Maurice Dickson. He is a brilliant singer/songwriter who, over several decades, has made a string of fine records and is a fantastic guitar player, and any other instrument with strings on, it appears. He is equally at home with one of his own songs, guitar pieces or even a blues classic. I first came across him through his Country Pickin' Blues record but there are seven other wonderful albums to choose from. He has toured the world and goes where his camper van takes him and, on the 25th July, it will be Baulking.
A fantastic way to spend an evening in a cool, literally, venue with a great musician and a reasonably priced cold drink.  Tickets are £15 each from cowmuckp@gmail.com

GENERAL
White Horse Gardening Club News. The annual plant sale trail raised a fantastic £1,219.90.   Whilst the primary aim of this fund raising event is to provide quality speakers, the WHGC Committee decided to make two donations:
A) £500 to The Great Dixter Charitable Trust that provides learning opportunities to educate people to become top level gardeners and ensure the conservation of the Great Dixter estate.
B) £100 to Fern Meadows in Faringdon who have just formed their own gardening club for residents and our donation will allow them to buy much needed gardening equipment.

Recycling computer ink cartridges and other things. Following the refurbishment of the village shop, the owners have kindly agreed that I can continue to use it as a collection point for computer ink cartridges, raising funds for the Suited & Booted charity. However, please note that the collection box will now be INSIDE the shop, so hand your cartridges over at the counter.  Black, colour, new, used, original and refilled computer ink cartridges are all welcome. However, PLEASE no leaking cartridges, toner or laser cartridges.
Also, I will be very happy to receive your unwanted medical appliances, dressings or in-date medication (including over-the-counter painkillers), which I send out to Ukraine through an Oxford based charity. And if you have any unwanted gentlemen's suits, shirts, cufflinks, ties or leather shoes in interview-ready condition, I would welcome those for Suited & Booted.
Please note that I no longer take stamps, but you can donate these to RNIB via a collection box in Shellingford church or to Sobell House at their shop in Wantage.
Thank you. Mike Thomas 07803035603

Coffee pods. Many thanks to the Uffington residents who took the coffee pods advertised earlier in the week, and in response have made a donation to one of my favourite charities – the Injured Jockeys Fund - Home - Injured Jockeys Fund

THAMES VALLEY POLICE
Thames Valley Police marks 25 Years of Community Policing Awards. We are proud to launch the 2026 Community Policing Awards, marking a significant milestone as the awards celebrate their 25th anniversary.
For a quarter of a century, the Community Policing Awards have shone a spotlight on the extraordinary contributions of officers, staff, volunteers and community members who go above and beyond to keep our communities safe, connected and supported.
This year’s theme, ‘celebrating the past, inspiring the future’, reflects both the legacy of the awards and their continued importance in recognising the people and partnerships that define modern policing.  Nominations are now open, and we are inviting you to help recognise those making a real difference across Thames Valley.  Nominate online using our form: Community Policing Awards 2026 - Nomination Form

Continued progress in making communities safer. Matthew Barber, Police & Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, has published his latest Annual Report highlighting progress made against his Police and Crime Plan.
The report demonstrates how continued investment in neighbourhood policing, support for victims, and targeted action on priority crime areas is helping to reduce harm and build safer communities across the Thames Valley.
The introduction of a Crime Education Hub, the establishment of the Thames Valley Road Victim Support Service, and the publication of the PCC’s Vehicle Crime Strategy are central to this progress. In addition, a recent refresh of the Data Hub has reinforced the OPCC’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Box Hedge Moth. Owners of Box Hedges should be aware that the issue of Box Hedge Moth is particularly prevalent at this time and should seek professional advice regarding treatment if required.
No warranty given or implied (i.e., please do your own research!), but one possible solution is to use Bug Clear Ultra2 which is specifically targeted at Box moth.  You need a small pressurised sprayer to deliver it for application.  This kills the larvae (which is what are doing the damage now) and the eggs. A pheromone trap for attracting the moths might prevent additional issue but won’t help with the defoliation one is seeing now – you need to target the caterpillars.
Because it is a moth – and therefore flies around – and since we have it throughout the village, if you can eradicate it from your hedges this year, you will need to keep an eye out each year.

Fraud alert: Scam calls using ‘spoofed’ phone numbers. City of London Police is urging the public to be sure of who they are talking to following a spike in reports of calls from ‘spoofed’ phone numbers.
Criminals use ‘spoofing’ software to intentionally cover up their real caller ID and instead, mirror the phone number of a legitimate organisation.  These scam calls may be automated, or from a real person. Their main goal is to trick you into sharing personal information or to transfer money.
This week, the City of London Police launched its courier fraud campaign to raise awareness of this type of fraud as it evolves across the UK, with criminals using increasingly sophisticated and persistent tactics. More information here:

From the Police & Crime Commissioner. Share your views on proposed police force mergers. Our survey is your opportunity to share your views on the Government's proposal to merge police forces across England and Wales, and the impact this will have on local policing in the Thames Valley. This follows a letter Matthew Barber (Police and Crime Commissioner) has sent to the Home Secretary today, setting out his concerns on the Police Reform White Paper.
The government is currently carrying out an Independent Review of Police Force Structures, having confirmed its intention to merge the current 43 forces across England and Wales into larger regional forces as part of reforms. We don’t yet know what this means for Thames Valley Police as it will be dependent on the outcome of the review.  However, if forces are reduced to 12 regional forces Thames Valley could become part of a larger regional South East force. Complete the survey and share your views by visiting our website: https://www.thamesvalley-pcc.gov.uk/get-involved/police-force-mergers/

55 million suspicious emails reported by the public. Members of the public have reported 55.7 million suspicious emails to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS). The free service was created by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in 2020 and since its launch has resulted in the removal of 250,000 scams across 443,000 malicious websites.
Why you should report phishing scams:  'Phishing' is when criminals use scam emails, text messages or phone calls to trick their victims. The aim is often to make you visit a website, which may download a virus onto your computer, or steal bank details or other personal information.
The NCSC is a UK government organisation that has the power to investigate and take down scam email addresses and websites. Reporting a scam is free and only takes a minute. By reporting suspicious emails, messages and calls, you can:
  • reduce the amount of scam communications you receive
  • make yourself a harder target for scammers
  • protect others from cyber crime online
How to report suspicious emails and text messages: If you’ve received an email or text message that doesn’t feel right, STOP!
  • break the contact – don’t reply, click on any links, call any phone numbers or make any payments
  • check if it’s genuine: contact the organisation directly using an email address or phone number you know is correct, e.g. from your utility bills, via a search engine, on the back of your card or by calling 159 for banks
  • Report suspicious emails by forwarding them to: report@phishing.gov.uk
  • Report suspicious text messages by forwarding them to: 7726 (it’s free of charge)
How to report suspicious phone calls: If you’ve received a phone call that doesn’t feel right, STOP! Hang up:
  • check if it’s genuine: contact the organisation directly using contact details you know are correct, such as those on a utility bill, official website, the back of your card or by calling 159 for your bank
  • don’t trust the Caller ID display on your phone – it’s not proof of ID
  • report it by sending a text to 7726 with the word ‘Call’ followed by the scam caller’s number
If you have been a victim of cyber crime or fraud, tell the police at www.reportfraud.police.uk.  For advice and guidance on what to do if you have been a victim of fraud, please visit: https://stopthinkfraud.campaign.gov.uk/recovery-from-fraud/
