THE WHITE HORSE SHOW
2017 is my fourth year as Treasurer of the White Horse Show. In the previous three years we have raised over £50,000 and since the Show began as a village fete, it has raised well over half a million pounds. Sadly, without some new faces in the organising committee, this will shortly come to an end. Members are getting old, standing down or moving on and we have not been able to find willing replacements. Many village organisations have come to rely on grants from the White Horse Show Trust to help with fund raising and if the Show closes, this "seed money", which can be up to 50% of the cost of a project, will be greatly missed.
The Show is a major organisational enterprise and cannot operate with just a few key volunteers. If it closes, it will be too late to rescue and reopen.
If you are a member of a club or organisation that has benefited from a White Horse Show Trust grant, please take this wake-up call seriously. If you cannot offer direct support, can you identify and persuade someone you know to join the committee and take on some of the burden that is causing a dwindling band of existing committee members to reconsider their long-term support.
The Show will be represented at the Newcomers Event on 7th October in Uffington Village Hall. If we have not found new committee members by then, I believe the future of the Show will be in doubt.

Women's Institute Grand Auction - All Welcome
Wiltshire WIs are hosting a Grand Auction of goods and promises on Saturday 19th August at Lavington School SN10 4EB (near Devizes). Viewing from 11.00am; Auction starts at 2.00pm. Hundreds of lots are up for sale including silver, bone china, Bristol blue glass and art work, as well as free vouchers generously donated by Wiltshire businesses. Chippenham auctioneer Gordon Brockman will officiate and has generously waived his fee. All of the auction proceeds will go to support the upkeep of Denman College, the WI's own educational college located at Marcham, Oxfordshire. Denman embodies one of the key aims of the Women's Institute – to advance the education of women and girls. Today Denman is open to WI members, non-members and men; around 11,000 people attend courses there each year.
Give blood – Tuesday 1 August
96% of us rely on the other 4% to give blood - don't leave it to someone else. If you're generally healthy and aged between 17 and 65, you can probably donate. The next donation session at The Beacon, Wantage is on Tuesday, 1st August between 13.15-15.30 & 16.15-19.15. Plans for up to 2,500 homes on the old airfield have been officially granted outline planning permission after Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey signed a legal agreement with Vale of White Horse District Council and Oxfordshire County Council setting out the infrastructure the developers will provide to support the new housing. The next stage is for the developers to submit detailed planning applications and once those are approved, building can begin. Local Plan.
We are currently preparing the next stage of our Local Plan, which takes into account the views of residents and organisations that responded to our previous consultations. We will be publishing the 'Local Plan 2031: Part 2' in October and it will be the final chance for comments and to say if you think the plan is 'sound'. The plan focuses on meeting the housing needs arising from Oxford that we have agreed to deliver within our district. New pay and display machines at Vale car parks.
New pay and display machines are being installed at council car parks from next month (August). These will allow you to pay by credit or debit card as well as coins, including the new £1. Old £1 coins will continue to be accepted until they go out of circulation on 15 October. You will also still be able to pay using your mobile phone via the Connect Cashless system.
When using the new machines, you will need to type in your vehicle registration on the key pad before payment is made. The machines will be powered by solar panels, making them more environmentally friendly.
Assisted waste collections
If you or someone you know has difficulties putting your rubbish and recycling out, due to illness or infirmity, you may qualify for an assisted collection. To find out more, call 0300 610610.
Get your electric blanket tested for free
We may be in the middle of summer but it's never too early to get an important date in the diary. If you use an electric blanket to help you keep warm during the colder months then it's important you get it checked each year to make sure it's safe. Electric blanket testing takes place at: - Abingdon Fire Station on 6 October
- Wantage Fire Station on 20 October
The testing is provided by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue with support from Oxfordshire County Council Trading Standards with Vale of White Horse District Council.

The Ridgeway Run 2017 September 23rd
If you have not yet entered for The Ridgeway Run 2017, this year's event takes place on Saturday 23 September at 9am. Distances are 5 or 10 miles and there is also a short Children's race for children aged 7 -13 years inclusive. Entries https://theridgewayrun.com/registration/
Runners last year ran for many reasons: whether it was for themselves and enjoying the glorious ridgeway or running to raise money for a charity (we have a number of charities "on board" who are looking for runners to run and raise much needed funds such as the local Lambourn RDA and Young Dementia based in Witney or you could run and raise money for a charity of your choice. Whatever the reason we would love to see you!!
Last year we had a great turn out of people running for various charities who once again would love to hear from you if you'd like to raise money for them, entry for charity places are at a much reduced rate. This year we also have a children's run, with proceeds going to Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Entry is via our website as above and open to children aged 7-13.

Theft of lead crime reduction advice. . We have seen an increase in the theft of lead from roofs, particularly schools and churches. Please consider the following if you have a lead roof: - Security marking – marking the lead will make the crime less attractive and make it harder for the offenders to sell on. If you use a DNA marking solution i.e. SmartWater it can be traced back to the owner if recovered.
- Keep gates locked and restrict vehicle access.
- Maximise surveillance levels i.e. cutting back tall trees.
- Encourage members of the local community to keep an eye on the building and report anything suspicious.
- Remove things that might help thieves get access to the roof, like water butts, bins and tall trees.
- Conduct regular checks of the roof so the theft is detected at the earliest possible time.
- Apply anti-climb paint to drain pipes and guttering.
- Install CCTV.
