Extraordinary Council Meeting. Due to the short reply timeframe for the recently received planning application for permission in principle for new self-build dwelling, access, and parking for existing allotments, at land off Fernham Road Uffington Faringdon there will be a Extraordinary Council Meeting on Thursday 1 August 2024 at 7pm in the Small Hall. As usual, members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. The agenda will be published on line and on the village notice board as usual.

Sad News. Mark Leahy's well-known dog Blizzard has sadly passed away aged 13. Blizzard was a wonderful dog and pet and put so many smiles on so many faces and will be sadly missed.

The PTA at Uffington C of E Primary School is still looking for volunteers to help support the White Horse Show this year on Sunday 25th August and Monday 26th August 2024, to help with car park marshalling. White Horse WI - Wednesday 24th July at 7:30 pm. White Horse WI are celebrating their 1st anniversary! Please come and join us as we celebrate a whole year of White Horse WI. Birthday celebrations will take place at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall on Wednesday 24th July at 7:30 pm. The evening is set to be filled with fun and laughter as we challenge the White Horse Quiz Master in a selection of quizzes to test those little grey brain cells and of course enjoy birthday cake! New members always welcome.

Village news 12 July 2024 UFFINGTON PARISH COUNCIL
Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE). The LGBCE is consulting on boundary proposals at district council level. The Commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries. It is reviewing Vale of White Horse to make sure councillors will represent about the same number of electors, and that ward arrangements will help the council work effectively.
The Commission has published proposals for changes to Vale of White Horse. It is proposing that there should be 39 councillors, with 5 three-member, 9 two-member and 6 single-member wards, including that Uffington should move from Stanford to Shrivenham and Watchfield ward. ST MARY'S UFFINGTON - CHURCHYARD WORKING PARTIES - COME AND JOIN US!
The Parochial Church Council of St Mary's Church are excited to share with you our plans for encouraging greater abundance of wildlife in the churchyard. With the encouragement of the Church of England, we are introducing some wildlife areas, which other churches have done to great effect.
Some areas of the churchyard are quite rough and species poor, and we will be managing these to ensure they do not get overgrown. This will help less robust species get established. Other areas, to the south of the main porch, are already more species rich and we will be encouraging these to flourish, allowing wild flowers to bloom, and provide a nectar source for pollinators. These areas will be cut in July and August, after the wild flowers have set seed. Some graves are present in these areas, and you are welcome to attend family member graves. We will mow paths through the longer grass to help with this.
Next year we will launch a Green Gym once a month between April and October and we encourage everyone to get involved. It's a great way to get a workout while helping out your local churchyard. In the meantime, we will have occasional working parties. Come along and join us! Everyone welcome. The next one is Saturday 20th July, 10am to midday, dry weather permitting.

Art group and seated exercises. The art group is again running every Wednesday from 10:30-12noon and the new seated exercise group will be on Thursdays from 10:30-11:30am. Both held at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall in Uffington. These are both funded by Walfinch so are free, but donations towards refreshments and supplies are expected. Wilts and Berks Canal Trust. - Have your say about the new Abingdon reservoir and its effect on the canal's restoration. As you may know the long-standing proposal for the construction of a reservoir to the southwest of Abingdon is now being promoted by Thames Water as one of the solutions to the long-term water requirements in the southeast – the Strategic South East Reservoir Option (SESRO). This new reservoir completely drowns the protected route for the canal.

GENERAL
Restoration of the White Horse. The first phase of work to restore the shrinking shape of the White Horse is now complete; the head and neck particularly are back to full size and the sampling of soil to more accurately establish the date of the hill figure has been completed. There is more to do next year, to bring our unique Horse up to scratch. The National Trust and Oxford Archaeology would like to thank the stalwart volunteers who turned out to help this week.

There is a vacancy on the Management Committee of the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall for a media manager. We are looking for someone to manage our Facebook page and our website to advertise and promote the facilities of the Hall. The Committee meets just once per month, usually on a Monday evening. Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall Booking System. For many years the village shop (Rose) has managed the booking system for hiring the large and small halls in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, including invoicing and handling cash payments, for which we are very grateful. Rose and Dave Holborow are planning to retire and the hall management committee have purchased an online booking system called Hallmaster. It is a well established system, used by many community halls.
We have kept hall users informed that Hallmaster will be replacing the village shop booking system and this is now happening. From Monday 1st July, the hall website www.thmh.co.uk has a new booking calendar. This can be accessed on the website by selecting "make a booking" and then clicking on the red button. You will find that all bookings that had already been made and were in the shop diary are now in Hallmaster and can be seen in the new booking calendar. We are in the process of changing items on the website that are no longer relevant and adding the terms of hire and guidance notes required.
It will take a short while to complete the changes and for hall users to become familiar with the system. We aim to have completed all aspects of the change by the end of the month but please note, this has already started and bookings can now be made using the new system, or by contacting me if you are unsure or having problems
The THMH Management Committee hope you will find Hallmaster a straightforward and reliable replacement for the shop diary that will provide accuracy and flexibility when booking – and please note - online payment of invoices will now be possible by credit or debit card as well as bank transfer.

National Youth Orchestra. A resident has a modest connection with some of those who run the National Youth Orchestra. They have sent the following:
'Do you know of a teenage musician who wants to take their playing to the next level? NYO Inspire is a free musical adventure for teenagers who want to make music an even bigger part of their lives but who lack opportunities to progress.' The letter goes on to add a certain amount more to its theme which I could share with either a relevant-aged musician or their parent(s). The age range is 13 – 18. I do not know of any such person, but maybe there is one, or even two, in the village who would relish such an opportunity. THAMES VALLEY POLICE
32 Million suspicious emails reported by the public. Over 32 million suspicious emails have been reported to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS), with more than a third of all emails reported in the last year, new figures reveal.
The reports have led to more than 329,000 websites addresses being removed by the National Cyber Security Centre. Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, launched a national phishing awareness campaign on 24 June 2024, as reporting reached its highest level since SERS launched. New data shows a rise of 44% year-on-year, with almost 11,611,400 reports made to SERS in 2023, up from 8,074,200 reports in 2022.
