Wed 2nd Feb 2022 - Coleshill Walk
Hope 2022 has started well for you all and we can look forward to a year of beautiful walks, hopefully leaving Covid far behind us. As promised our February walk will be located around Coleshill Village and Park. An easy walk of about four miles with some really beautiful scenery. Meeting as usual in Uffington Village Hall car park at 9:20 for car sharing and a 9:30 start. Or if you prefer, meet at Coleshill Cafe courtyard at 9.45am. Toilets available. Parking in cafe courtyard (limited parking) or Estate car park. If you would like to, please join us for refreshments in the cafe after the walk. We are promised some warmer temperatures around ten degrees, light cloud and low chance of rain.
We are always grateful for suggestions for walks, so if you have a favourite walk you would like to share with the rest of the group do let us know. Hope to see lots of you next week.

White Horse Gardening Club – Thursday 3 February
Talk: The Winter Garden at Spring Cottage'. BY: Val Bourne, award winning garden writer, organic gardener and lecturer. She writes for The Daily Telegraph, Saga Magazine and many others and has been awarded the Garden Media Journalist of the Year and Columnist of the Year. She is also the author of many books, including The Living Jigsaw and The Ten-Minute Gardener.

- Work will begin on the Park and Charge Electric Vehicle charging scheme in Wantage next week. The scheme proposes a total of up to 62 new charging points in car parks across the Vale of White Horse district, which are still to be confirmed. Engineers are scheduled to begin installing electric chargers at Portway. You can see details on our website by clicking this link
- Vale of White Horse District Council's Cabinet is to consider proposals to make the district's car parking more financially sustainable. Council taxpayers have been subsidising car parking across the Vale for many years. This was costing taxpayers around £300,000 each year, and during Covid this has risen to £450,000 per year. - The following road closures have been notified: The B4507 will be closed at multiple places during January, February & March 2022, for various telecoms and resurfacing works. It isn't currently 100% clear, but it may be that these closures are variously between 8am and 5pm (telecoms) and 9.30am & 3.30pm (roadworks), rather than complete 24 hour closures.

Witness Appeal for Thefts from Motor Vehicles 23-01-22. Between 11:30am and 1pm on the 23rd January, several vehicles have been broken into and items removed in the Blowingstone Hill car park, Kingston Lisle in Wantage. These items were then dumped in a bush near Sparsholt Firs car park.

Britchcombe Farm
Save the Date. Residents will be aware that at Britchcombe Farm, the house and farm yard and 140 acres of land (including all the fields previously used for camping by Mrs Seymour) have been bought by Lovat Parks Ltd, a company which offers holidays in static caravans as well as tents, in permanent (all year-round) caravan parks. If you have a view on the above, or would just like to find out more about it, please come to the Parish Council meeting on 14 February.
We hope that this meeting (and future meetings) will be face-to-face in the Uffington Village Hall, but this will be confirmed nearer the time.

People who live, work in, or visit Oxfordshire are urged to have their say on a plan to deliver a zero carbon transport network by 2040.
Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet approved the draft Local Transport and Connectivity Plan (LTCP) last October, which – among its many ambitions – aims to cut car journeys by a quarter by 2030 and reduce them by a third by 2040. It also plans to increase the number of cycling trips from 600,000 to one million by 2031.
Now residents can have their say on the plan until 16 March. People can take part and make their voices heard at letstalk.oxfordshire.gov.uk/ltcp. Final adoption of the plan is currently scheduled for summer 2022.
Councillor Duncan Enright, Oxfordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Travel and Development Strategy, said: "We want to know what it would take for people to make fewer journeys by car. We want to hear from them about the financial implications and what they need in terms of alternative transport arrangements.
"The estimated average cost of owning a car is nearly £500 per month if you are paying for it on credit, or nearly £300 if you only take into account fuel, insurance, tax, maintenance and so on. How much would you spend on alternative ways to get around by bus, train, bike, taxi or on foot? What else would you need to cut the number of cars in your house and cut your monthly bills?
"We know we face considerable challenges as we seek to deliver our aspirations. There will be tough decisions around how we use existing road space, but now is the time for an ambitious and comprehensive plan which the LTCP provides. We believe it will help create a thriving county, tackle inequality, protect our environment and improve the health and wellbeing of residents.
"We are really keen for the people of Oxfordshire to engage with us in this process, not just now but throughout the years as it evolves. We know it will take a long time to get to where we want to be, but we have a clear vision of shifting the balance away from single occupancy cars in favour of something more sustainable."
The LTCP is a wide-ranging document with more than 90 policies, which aim to provide the backbone for the council's commitment to invest in an inclusive, integrated and sustainable transport network for the county. It looks at ways of reducing the need to travel and discouraging unnecessary individual private vehicle use through making walking, cycling, public and shared transport the natural first choice. Key policy areas include: - walking and cycling
- road safety
- digital connectivity
- public transport
- environment, carbon and air quality
- network, parking and congestion management
- freight and logistics.
The county council will be hosting a series of online webinars to introduce the LTCP in more detail and answer questions. Detail about how to sign up for these will be provided on the council's website and social media in the coming weeks. Webinars will be hosted on the dates below for the following audiences: - Town and parish councils: 24 January and 1 February (7pm - 8pm)
- Businesses: 26 January (8am - 9am)
- Transport stakeholders: 20 January (2pm - 3pm)
- General public: 19 January and 7 February (7pm - 8pm)

Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall AGM – 24 January
Despite the Memorial Hall being completely closed for three months of lockdown last year, there were more than 250 hall bookings in the following nine months as Covid controls gradually relaxed and in 2022 we are continuing to keep the building open and available, whenever possible, while staying within current Covid guidelines for keeping safe.
The management committee has been under strength for some time and currently there are not enough volunteers to fill the roles necessary to run the Memorial Hall to the required standard. This is a serious and worrying situation. The Memorial Hall cannot continue to stay open and be available for hire if the management team is unable to ensure the building operates safely, legally and efficiently.
The Memorial Hall is a charity and a public building and must operate within charity rules and guidelines and to health and safety and legal requirements. This needs a management team of volunteers to ensure the building and hirers not only operate safely and legally but that the building is properly maintained and improved.
The Annual General Meeting will be held in the Memorial Hall on Monday 24th January at 8.00pm, which is when the current management committee stands down and a new committee is elected.
If you use the building and wish to see it continue to be available, please consider attending the AGM and offering to join the management team. The last two years of Covid have resulted in many of us only looking to when the pandemic will end rather than looking to the future. The hall urgently needs volunteers if it is to continue, in the future, to provide a valuable community asset to Baulking, Uffington and Woolstone. Please attend the AGM to find out where support is needed and to offer to help with the maintenance and future of the Memorial Hall.

With the continuing problems around Covid, the Uffington Players have had to take the difficult decision to postpone the pantomime from February to the October half term. This has been decided for the safety of all involved including our audience. We are sorry for any disappointment this may course, but feel this is the right thing to do at this time.
