Uffington Wed Walk - May 4th - Badbury Clumps Bluebells. May's First Wednesday will be a circular walk taking in the beautiful bluebells at Badbury Clumps. This is becoming an annual favourite for May, I'm told the bluebells are particularly stunning this year.
Meeting as always initially at the Uffington Village Hall car park for car sharing at 9:20 to set off at 9:30. The Big Picnic on Sunday 5th June 3 - 7pm for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. The Parish Council has booked the hall and Jubilee Field for residents of Uffington, Baulking and Woolstone to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a Big Picnic on Sunday 5th June between 3 and 7pm. There will be a bar, the Whitehorsebox Pizzas and of course the opportunity to bring your own picnic onto the Jubilee Field (or to gather in the hall if wet).
We are also hoping to have some activities but need some help! A tug of war is planned, but if you would like to help organise children's games, a light hearted cricket or rounders match, or if you have any other ideas for entertainment for the afternoon please contact Fenella Oberman: fenella.oberman@uffington.net

No Mow May. Wildflowers could bloom in more public areas next month after South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse District Councils pledged their support for No Mow May. The two councils already designate wildflower meadows which they only cut two to three times a year but this year they will trial leaving several additional areas of ... Uffington Parish Council has long been conscious of its responsibilities towards protecting and preserving the environment. The verges around the village are cut under arrangements made by the Council in July and then again at the end of the season to tidy up for winter. The verges around the Jubilee Field and at some road junctions are done more often than this for reasons of tidiness and visibility, but hopefully this will not be necessary until after the end of May.
Waste collections. Due to the bank holiday on Monday 2 May, bins will be emptied on Tuesday (Black and food).

The Falklands War 1982: "A Close Run Thing" - 7pm, 18 May 2022
40 years on, Brigadier David Chaundler discusses Falklands War experiences in Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum Talk. The next in Soldiers of Oxfordshire (SOFO) Museum's series of online talks, The Falklands War 1982 - A Close Run Thing will be streamed on the museum website from 7pm, 18 May 2022.
Nearly 40 years earlier, speaker Brigadier David Chaundler (then Lieutenant Colonel) was parachuted into the South Atlantic to take over command of the Second Battalion of the Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) following the death of his old friend, Lt-Col. Arriving in Goose Green four days after the battle, he would see 2 PARA through to the end of the conflict and the surrender of the occupying Argentinian forces. While commanding 2 PARA, the battalion would open-up the southern flank, witness the air attack on the Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram, before moving up onto the northern flank and taking part in the Battle for Wireless Ridge. He and 2 PARA would eventually take Port Stanley - against orders.
The talk will also be followed by a live Q&A, allowing viewers to ask further questions about his experiences during the conflict. No digital ticket, sign up or registration is required to view this talk - but the museum asks for donations to support their continued work caring for the county's military collections, and in bringing stories like David's to a wider audience through events like these.

The Parish Council Annual Assembly was held on 11 April in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall and attended by approximately 30 members of the public. Copies of the slides used in the main and Britchcombe Farm presentations can be viewed on the Council website.
Children's Air Ambulance Clothing Bank. The Village Hall car park now has a clothing bank where items can be deposited in support of the Children's Air Ambulance. This is part of the national Air Ambulance Service and operates two helicopters dedicated to flying critically ill babies and children from one hospital to another for specialist care. Like other branches of the Air Ambulance Service, it is only through the generosity of donations that the helicopters are able to keep flying.

Footpaths. We are fortunate to live in a very rural and attractive part of the Oxfordshire countryside, and to be able to use the many footpaths and bridleways around the village. Farmers have livestock in the fields and we are currently in the height of the lambing season. If a dog worries, chases or attacks an animal, it will do a great deal of harm, not only to the animal concerned but also to the others in the herd or flock who may be caught up in the ensuing flight from the attacker. If a farmer catches a dog worrying livestock, he is entitled to shoot it.
Farmers are most unlikely to put a dangerous animal in a field with a footpath, as it is not in their interests to do so. Here is some very elementary advice about walking in the countryside: - If you feel alarmed at the prospect of going through a field with animals, don't do it – take another route.
- Observe warning notices.
- Don't get between a cow and her calf.
- If you have a dog with you, keep it on a lead.
- If the dog does a poo in the field, bag it, and dispose of it sensibly – never leave bags on a footpath or hung on a gate or hedge.
