Christmas items for Faringdon Food Bank
The food bank will be putting together boxes for Christmas. They would appreciate donations of Christmas food (e.g. cake, pudding, mince pies, chocolate figures, chocolate coins, boxes of sweets/chocolates for sharing. The only thing to look out for is use by dates to ensure products last over the Christmas holiday. Items may be left in the box outside the front door of Benjie's Cottage, and at the village shop.
St Mary's Church Carol Service – 19 December, at 6pm
Despite Covid restrictions we plan to celebrate Christmas with carols, sung by a village choir, and readings of those timeless Bible passages which tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Hopefully we should be able to accommodate approximately 50 which is, sadly, about the half of our usual gathering, but live streaming should include those who are, for whatever reason, unable to attend in person. Tickets on a first come first served basis are available from Val Chapman, email: Vjchapman64@gmail.com
The function is of course subject to the Covid regulations current at the time.

Avian flu
There is a current outbreak of Avian flu. It hasn't been very well publicised by Defra and given the number of people keeping poultry in the village it is worth a mention: cases of Avian influenza have been found near Stroud, Leominster and in Cheshire. An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone has been declared across England, Scotland and Wales. This means it is now a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures. The prevention zone means bird keepers across the country must: - Ensure the areas where birds are kept are unattractive to wild birds, for example by netting ponds, and by removing wild bird food sources;
- Feed and water your birds in enclosed areas to discourage wild birds;
- Minimise movement in and out of bird enclosures;
- Clean and disinfect footwear and keep areas where birds live clean and tidy;
- Reduce any existing contamination by cleansing and disinfecting concrete areas, and fencing off wet or boggy areas.

Unfortunately, and this won't be a surprise, the annual gatherings around the Uffington Christmas tree will not be going ahead as usual. However, thanks to Jude and Michelle, there is a plan.........
At 6.45pm on Tuesday 1st December the beautiful, whopper of a Christmas Tree, very kindly donated to us by a local family and Parkers Landscaping Group, will be lit up. As a village, let's all join in with the festive cheer and have a village wide Christmas lights switch on. Doesn't need to be a tree, could just be a token Christmas light in your home, it doesn't matter, but it will capture our amazing community spirit. Wed Walks cancelled until Spring
Hi Everyone,
Just a quick confirmation that of course all First Wed Walks are cancelled for now until restrictions are changed. Fingers crossed that with all the encouraging news of the new vaccines we will be able to start the walks again in the Spring of 2021. In the meantime, we hope all of you are keeping well during lockdown and still enjoying walks together in twos.

From St. Mary's Church Uffington
The Parochial Church Committee met on Wednesday 18th November via Zoom. Many organisations and businesses are struggling during the Covid-19 crisis and your church is no exception. The business of the evening was dominated by discussions around the church finances. With fundraising events curtailed during the pandemic outbreak, the Committee are doing all that they can to raise additional income whilst keeping expenditure in check. In order to get through the coming months in restricted circumstances, the Committee decided that it could not meet its usual obligations to the Diocese in terms of the Parish Share payments. They will be reduced for the first six months of 2021 whilst we have to rely on limited reserves. However the Committee did decide that maintaining the appearance of the churchyard and the floodlighting of the church tower would be continued as normal as it is understood how much this is valued by the wider community. If you would like to help St Mary's to keep afloat in these difficult times we would really value your support through the Parish Giving Scheme. Details will be coming through your door soon, or leaflets can be found in Church, and more information on line at www.parishgiving.org.uk. With much appreciation.

Jon Boden, St Nicholas Church Baulking, Saturday December 12th
As you will all have guessed the Jeb Loy Nichols show on 27th November has been postponed but Jeb is happy to reschedule it, so we will look for a date after Christmas.
Cast your minds back a decade to our first show in Uffington in 2010. It featured a pair of fresh-faced young men, Spiers and Boden, and it sold out. In fact, they did two more shows and they both sold out. Their career as a duo went from strength to strength and then they formed the monster that became Bellowhead which went on to sell out the Albert Hall. When Bellowhead finished, Jon Boden started a very successful solo career and fronted the hugely popular Remnant Kings. He has become a folk superstar. Under normal circumstances there is no chance of Jon playing at Baulking but these are strange times and he is doing two shows for us, at 3.00 pm and at 7.30 pm, on the 12th December. Tickets are £17 each, with all the money going to Jon. They are already half gone, there are only 30 tickets for each performance and both these Covid secure shows will sell out. Tickets are available from 01367 820282.

Theft from Motor Vehicles In Beauty Spots
We have received an increase in reports of theft from motor vehicles from beauty spot car parks across the local police area. Due to the current lockdown restrictions, we have seen an increase in people meeting up to exercise, and leaving more vehicles in the car parks. Unfortunately, this has created opportunities for criminals to take advantage.
Please remain vigilant and follow the below advice to help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of this type of crime. Report any suspicious behaviour, and call 999 in an emergency. - Always keep your vehicle locked. Close all windows and the sun roof, if your vehicle has one.
- Do not leave anything in your vehicle- take all your personal possessions with you and don't leave anything on display.
- Consider security marking any valuables that you regularly take in your vehicle.
- Do not leave the vehicle's documents inside the vehicle.
- Park with care- try to park in a well used area.
- Use a steering lock, electronic immobiliser or alarm.
- Secure number plates with security screws.

Live Chat Improves Access To Support For Victims of Crime
Victims First which supports victims of crime and abuse across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, has launched a Live Chat service to improve access to support for victims.
The Live Chat service which is now live on Victim First's website www.victims-first.org.uk, offers a new way to access support, enabling victims to talk online with a Victims First Officer, safely and in confidence. Live Chat enhances the existing Victims First service, providing an additional and valuable route to support. It offers a discreet way for victims to access support, which is especially important for victims of domestic abuse who may be living with their abuser, and will be of particular benefit to people who prefer using online channels to reach out for help.
Anyone needing support can get in touch via the Live Chat button on the Victims First website www.victims-first.org.uk or by calling Victims First on 0300 1234 148 to speak to a trained Victims First Officer who will be able to provide free confidential emotional and practical support. Live Chat will be staffed by trained Victims First Officers during Victims First opening hours.
Victims First is managed by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. It offers free support to any victim or witness of crime in the Thames Valley regardless of the crime, when it took place or whether or not the crime has been reported to the police.![]()

HOW ABOUT A FILM CLUB?
Is anyone interested in running a Film Club in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall when we are allowed to fully open again?
Some of you may know that while the building was closed in the first lockdown, an audio-visual system was installed in the large hall and when the building reopens, this system will be available to organisations that may wish to use a microphone, play music and/or project pictures and video.
The Management Committee, in choosing the equipment for the system, specified a large, 4 metre wide screen and a powerful projector that will allow the projection of DVD films to a full hall.
If you would like to set up a club when the building is once again allowed to host large meetings, the Committee would be pleased to hear from you and to provide guidance and contacts. Obviously, the building had to close during November because of the current Covid-19 restrictions but will be open again as soon as allowed.

Scam Warning - Fake Paypal Emails.
Action Fraud is warning people selling items online to be on the lookout for criminals sending fake PayPal emails. - Between January 2020 and September 2020, 21,349 crime reports were made to Action Fraud about fake PayPal emails.
- Victims reported losing a total of £7,891,077.44 during this time.
- Those targeted included people selling jewellery, furniture and electronics via online marketplaces.
- Reports of fake PayPal emails to Action Fraud made up a third of all reports of online shopping and auction fraud during this period
How does it happen? Criminals have been targeting people selling items online, by sending them emails purporting to be from PayPal. The emails trick victims into believing they have received payment for the items they're selling on the platform. Typically, after receiving these emails, victims will ship the item to the criminal. This leaves them at a further disadvantage having not received any payment for the item and also no longer being in possession of it
How can you protect yourself? - Sellers beware: If you're selling items on an online marketplace, be aware of the warning signs that your buyer is a scammer. Scammers may have negative feedback history, or may have recently set up a new account to avoid getting poor feedback. Don't be persuaded into sending anything until you can verify you've received the payment.
- Scam messages: Don't click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails, and never respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial details.
- How to spot the difference: A PayPal email will address you by your first and last name, or your business name, and will never ask you for your full password, bank account, or credit card details in a message.
If you think you've been a victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraud online at www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
Older Drivers Forum Webinars. We are working with the Older Drivers Forum to run a series of free webinars aimed at older drivers, as well as their families and friends, with advice on how to drive safely for longer. The webinars will take place next week (starting 16 November) coinciding with Brake's National Road Safety week.
The chair and founder of the Older Drivers Forum Rob Heard said : "In these difficult times we wanted to be able to still communicate with the mature motorists and help them, especially when getting back to driving after the lockdown, so they can carry on driving safely for longer. Lockdown news
As I'm sure all residents are aware, a national lockdown is in place from yesterday. Although it doesn't make for light reading, the most comprehensive information I have found on what we can and can't do is in the Oxfordshire All In bulletin from earlier this week, available here:

Local information - Uffington Post Office and Stores will be remaining open, on the usual hours. However, if any member of staff should become infected with Covid-19, they will be required to close for 14 days. Please therefore never attempt to enter the Shop if you are feeling at all unwell, any member of your household is self-isolating, or if you are experiencing any of the symptoms of Covid-19.
- It appears that the rate of cases in the UBW villages may be increasing; it is therefore essential for all residents to observe all the well-known precautions, with even greater diligence.
- The children's playground will remain open.
- Fish & Chips. The van will be attending normally (Tuesdays) throughout.
- The Church will be open during the day, for private prayer; for any other needs please contact the Vicar.

Support for those classified as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable. The government has advised those classified as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) to take extra precautions. We will begin contacting CEV residents to ensure that they have our details and know that help is available should they need it. Remembrance Day
The annual service of remembrance will take place at St Mary's Uffington at 10.45 am this coming Sunday, 8 November. Government guidance for ensuring that this takes place as safely as possible under the current lockdown situation states that the numbers of those participating in the event must be kept to a minimum. For the avoidance of doubt, the following people are legally permitted to attend events to commemorate Remembrance Sunday as participants. Attendees should observe social distancing at all times. - people attending as part of their work (such as local councillors, local faith leaders, the local MP)
- people attending in a voluntary capacity on behalf of a recognised organisation
- members of the armed forces
- veterans of the armed forces, and/or their representatives or carers
Members of the public are legally permitted to stop and watch the event as spectators, but event organisers should take reasonable steps to discourage the public from attending events, and be mindful of the risk that such events pose, especially to veterans who are often elderly.
Where members of the public do attend, they must only attend the event with their own household or those in their support bubble, or one other person (children under school age, as well as those dependent on round-the-clock care, such as those with severe disabilities, who are with their parents will not count towards the limit on 2 people meeting outside) and observe social distancing rules. Contact details will be taken, for Track and Trace purposes.
From the Vicar: Please note that both Remembrance Services in Uffington and Shellingford will be ENTIRELY OUTSIDE beginning at 10.45 and lasting for no more than half an hour. So, if you plan to come please do wrap up warm, with a coat to protect against possible rain.

Jubilee Field Autumn Tidy
The lockdown means that we must cancel the Jubilee Field Autumn Tidy postponed last week until 7 November. However: We are all encouraged to take lots of exercise in the fresh air within family bubbles or with one other person from another household. So, if people happen to wander onto the Field on Saturday, or any other day in the next month, then here is a list of suggested activities: - Dead seasonal growth around pond could be cut to improve view and safety. Cut material to go on bonfire stack.
- Piles of chippings near pond could be spread along paths to make them less muddy.
- The pile of material left near the swings could be recovered to the bonfire pile and the logs rescued for wood-burners.
- Gather fallen branches either to bonfire pile or to a logs pile as appropriate.
- Look for trees with ivy climbing and cut through and add to bonfire pile.

Airband FTTP Project Uffington/Kingston Lisle
If you missed this last week - The Parish Council has been asked to look into the possibility of establishing a community project to get "ultrafast" or "full fibre" broadband installed into homes and businesses in the village. This should provide a significant improvement to services with a much faster and more reliable FTTP "gigabit ready" (150Mbps to 1000Mbps/1 Gbps) "future-proofed" service. FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) means a pure "full fibre" broadband connection from the exchange, into your home or business.
Because this is a rural area, government grants are available which could eliminate altogether the cost to individuals of installing full-fibre through such a project. In addition, Oxfordshire County Council has just introduced a scheme to support better rural broadband with additional grants. To assist the Parish Council in identifying how much interest there might be in getting full-fibre broadband installed in the Uffington area we would be grateful if you would complete a short Survey Monkey questionnaire by 30 November. Potential Scam - OAP Winter fuel allowance
A resident has received letters about the winter fuel allowance (WFA). These bore no relationship to last year's letters, no NIC ref and stating "would be paid into your bank**1234. It is though that that this could be a scam, waiting for you to phone the DWP and perhaps, requesting bank/ soc/PO details. Be careful.
Temporary Road Closure at Uffington, Fernham Road – now 30 November to 2 December
In the interests of public safety, it will be necessary for Oxfordshire County Council to close the road as detailed above in order to facilitate trial holes on the existing bridge structure "Uffington Mill". (This was previously scheduled for 16 -18 November).

The November Market has been cancelled; it is hoped to be able to hold a December Christmas Market.
