Uffington Weds Walk - 4th Sept Kingston Lisle/Fawler/Ridgeway. The September Wednesday Walk will be a circular walk starting from Kingston Lisle towards Fawler and up to the Ridgeway, then heading east and coming back down the hill to Westcot and back to KL. A shorter than usual walk of 4.3 miles and an uphill stretch onto the Ridgeway. Forecast looks perfect walking weather, 18 degrees light breeze and sunny intervals. Initially meeting at Uffington Village Hall as usual at 9:20 for a 9:30 start for car sharing up to Kingston Lisle. For those who would like to go straight to Kingston Lisle meeting just beyond the Blowing Stone Pub near the bus stop where there is roadside parking.
It can sometimes be difficult to think of new walks so if anyone has a favourite walk that they would like to suggest or lead us on that would be great. The Walking Group Committee: Verity, Pamela, Joe and Hilary.

Digital Café – Thursday 12 September 10.30 am to 12.30. The White Horse Medical Practice will be running a 'drop-in' session to help residents understand and use the various NHS apps coming into use, in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall – all welcome.
Lea Morris, St Nicholas Church, Baulking, Friday 20th September. Our final show of the year will feature, all the way from the USA via Germany, the soul/folk singer Lea Morris. She is often compared to Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell and I can hear some Richie Havens in there but her use of warm vocals, looped harmonies and vocal percussion all lead to a unique style.
She was born in Washington DC to musical parents and started singing in the church in Baltimore then taught herself to play guitar and write songs. She has shared a stage with Mavis Staples, Odetta and Bobby McFerrin who penned the much played song Don't Worry, Be Happy. You can find out more at www.thisislea.com

Six Oxfordshire recycling centres to temporarily close. For safety reasons, Oxfordshire County Council will be shutting the centres for two days each, but only one centre will be shut at any time. Stanford in the Vale, near Faringdon, will be closed on September 2 and 3.
THAMES VALLEY POLICE
Vehicle breaks at beauty spots and rural locations. Unfortunately, we have seen a spike in vehicles being broken into and personal belongings being taken. This is happening at beauty spot car parks and rural areas were people park to go for walks. Can we remind people to take any personal belongings with them on their walk or leave them at home.
Thames Valley Police are proactively patrolling the rural areas to try and identify offenders and deter them from committing crimes within our areas. If you see anyone acting suspiciously please do not hesitate to contact us.

This application has been refused by the District Council.
Power cuts. We have had an update from SSE on the work needed on the trees in and around the village. Access has been granted on all sites and the work is currently being planned in, we do not have a date for this yet but it will be within the next few weeks. If your power has to be turned off for the work then you will receive a letter with all of the information.
Parish Councillor Vacancy. It is anticipated that there will be a vacancy arising for a Parish Councillor in October. Once this has been confirmed by the Vale, a notice confirming the vacancy can be posted. Uffington Heritage Trail. Join the ramblers this Saturday 24th August for a guided walk to the site of the crashed Wellington Bomber in a field outside Uffington. White Horse Show. A reminder that White Horse Show is back this weekend on Fawler Road. This community event, held on Sunday and Monday, from 10 am to 5 pm, promises two days of entertainment, family fun, and delicious food.
Since 1972, the annual White Horse Show has been a cornerstone of our local community. It's an event that brings people together from all walks of life to have fun and raise money for local causes. The show features a wide range of arena displays, including falconry, heavy horses, sheepdogs and skill at arms. There's something for everyone to enjoy. In addition to the arena displays, the show offers a variety of family-friendly activities, including: - Live music

- Children's entertainment
- Delicious food and drink vendors

The White Horse Show is a vital fundraiser for local villages. Wicklesham Quarry - Request for call-in to the Secretary of State for Communities, Housing and Local Government for MW.0151/23, Oxfordshire County Council- re WICKLESHAM QUARRY SSSI. The Parish Council and many local bodies and individuals submitted objections to the application for a development of 43,000 square metres (in the revised documents) at Wicklesham Quarry SSSI, outside Faringdon. Anna Hoare - protectwicklesham@gmail.com - has written a letter to the Secretary of State at the Casework Unit to ask her to call in this planning application, and to Little Coxwell's MP Charlie Maynard, to ask him to endorse the request for the call-in by writing to the Secretary of State on behalf of his constituents. Anna has suggested that Uffington residents could help by writing a similar letter to our MP Olly Glover - olly.glover.mp@parliament.uk
The criteria to justify the Secretary of State calling in the application in this case are that: -
1. It is of more than local importance
2. The proposal conflicts with national policies
3. The site has been the subject of widespread controversy for ten years
4. There are reasons to be concerned about how the application might be determined locally

The next steps for Councils' Joint Local Plan. Following two hugely successful public consultations, which saw South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District councils receive a Highly Commended award at the Planning Resource Awards 2024, the councils have now set out the next steps for their Joint Local Plan (JLP). Active Communities Team. The Vale have written to raise awareness to the wider parish that the Active Communities Team at Vale of White Horse District Council have a new Facebook page.
The team run a range of free summer holiday activities, have projects for people of all ages to support them in moving more such as Move Together, You Move, Community Walks, outdoor table tennis tables and more. They are hoping to spread awareness of these offers across the district, as many people say they are not aware of the activities going ahead.
The team also goes to many parishes over the summer to deliver fundays, multisports, dance, football, pickleball and more and if this is something you are interested in us delivering please let me know and we will try and accommodate you.

THAMES VALLEY POLICE
First dog banning orders for two men convicted of hare coursing. Following our investigation, two men have been given dog banning orders after being convicted of hare coursing – a first for the force.
We found the pair in a lay-by at night with two dogs, a catapult, van and hare-coursing equipment. We arrested the men and seized everything else, including the dogs who have since been rehomed. As well as being banned from owning dogs for two years, the duo were also ordered to pay us £600 in kennelling costs, £300 in court costs and a £26 victim surcharge.
Our lead, Inspector Stuart Hutchings, said: "We are committed to tackling hare coursing and bringing offenders to justice." Read more on our website

Village news 16 August 2024 UFFINGTON PARISH COUNCIL
Power Cuts. There continue to be unexplained, short duration, but very irritating power cuts affecting various areas of the village. SSE are aware of the difficulties being caused to consumers and are working hard to put things right – there were for example a number of SSE assets working in the village on 14 August. They are investigating in two particular areas: - Installing fault finding equipment to pick up hairline cracks in power lines, which are otherwise difficult to trace
- Seeking, via the courts, access to a property on the west side of Uffington whose owner is refusing access for the purposes of reducing the height of a tree known to be affecting high voltage lines.
The message from SSE is: Please continue to report power cuts to them on telephone number 105.

We have great pleasure inviting you to the launch of the Great Chalk Way with renowned author, Ridgeway National Trail Patron and President of the countryside charity CPRE, Mary-Ann Ochota.
The Great Chalk Way is a magnificent coast to coast walking and riding route covering approximately 400 miles across southern England linking Dorset with Norfolk. The route follows established long distance paths and two National Trails that traverses a chalk ridge and includes the Wessex Ridgeway, Cranborne Droves Way, Sarsen Way, Ridgeway National Trail, the Icknield Way and Peddars Way National Trail.
The launch takes place on Thursday 10th October 2024 from 9.45am - 12.30 at the Dunstable Downs Visitor Centre, Bedfordshire LU6 2GY. This invitation includes a National Trust wildlife and heritage guided walk around the Dunstable Downs Five Knolls. Please RSVP by August 29th to secure your place and to receive further information regarding parking and facilities. Help needed! This is a call for assistance by as many as possible tomorrow morning at 10.00 am, by the village pond. We need to remove the thistles before they go to seed again, and to clear around the little beech hedge which has again been totally hidden in weeds, so that it does not mistakenly get zapped when we tackle the very invasive poplar shoots. 10.00 am please tomorrow, equipped with shears, rakes and gloves.

Thefts from vehicles at beauty spot locations -Crime Prevention Advice. Most thefts from vehicles are opportunist. If valuable possessions such as handbags, laptops, mobile phones are left on show inside a vehicle, it is much more likely to be targeted by thieves.
Even items of little value, such as shopping bags and clothing, may tempt a potential thief to break into the vehicle to see whether they contain anything worth stealing. As we head into the summer months, we know more people will be leaving their vehicles at local beauty spots to go and enjoy the scenery, which is why we want to remind you to remove valuables from your vehicle and lock it. Make sure to physically check that doors and windows are locked, especially if you have used the remote to lock the vehicle, then look inside again to make sure you've not left anything behind. See below for more tips on how to keep your vehicle safe:
Beauty Spot Vehicle Advice:
-Before you leave home, think about what you need and leave any unnecessary items of value at home.
-Try to park in sign-posted parking areas.
-Be cautious about parking your car in isolation. Thieves can be put off when other people are around.
-Do not leave anything in your vehicle. A jacket or coat left behind may be of very little value to you, but a thief may think it has been used to hide a laptop or handbag and will break into your vehicle to find out.
-Take items with you rather than locking them in the boot, you can't be sure who has seen you do this.
-Make sure you do not leave documents which have your personal details on in your vehicle.
-Remember to lock all windows and sunroofs and lock all doors. Try the handle to check it's locked and look inside again to make sure you haven't left anything behind.
-Make use of any security products you might have such as steering locks.
-Whilst enjoying the sights make sure you keep your bag and possessions with you.
