Uffington Walk Wed 4th April
Hi Everyone,
Time to walk off all those chocolate eggs! We are planning our April walk starting from Buckland, hopefully it will be a bit drier underfoot in that area. We will meet at Uffington Village Hall at 9.30 as usual to arrange car sharing to the start of the walk.

Cycling Club – 2nd Wednesday
We are starting the Cycling Club again on 2nd Wednesday of each month. Wednesday 11th April will be our first cycle trip of the year - meeting at 9.30 at Uffington village shop. Cycle routes will be approx 10 miles with a coffee/cake stop.

Friends of the Ridgeway : The Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize – 21 and 22 April
Readers, and particularly the artists amongst you, may be interested to hear about the Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize and associated Exhibition established by the Friends of the Ridgeway. The aim of the competition is to encourage more people to experience the creative inspiration offered by the Ridgeway and its environment. The theme of the competition is 'Spirit of the Ridgeway' including the Ridgeway history, ecology, and landscape across the environs. Prizes are offered for works of painting, sculpture, photography and writing (poetry or prose), with separate prizes in each category and an overall winner. The prizes will be awarded at the Ridgeway Friends Day on Sunday 22 April 2018. There will be an exhibition of works submitted for the competition which will be open to the public on Saturday 21 April and Sunday 22 April 2018 in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington (Broad Street, Uffington, Oxfordshire, SN7 7RA), located in the centre of the beautiful and historic rural village of Uffington in the Vale of the White Horse.

Waste collections over Easter
As with every bank holiday, our waste crews will empty your bin on a different day. Waste normally collected on Monday will be removed on Tuesday 3 April (Green, food and garden waste). You can recycle all your Easter egg boxes, plastic inserts and foil wrapping, too – they all go in your green bin. Please put recycling in loose, or in clear sacks – we won't take it away if recycling is not in see-through bags.

Reporting Hate Crime
Hate Crime is defined by the Criminal Justice system as 'Any crime or incident which is perceived by the victim, or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice, based on a person's real or presumed religion, sexual orientation, race, gender identity or disability'. A hate incident becomes a hate crime when a criminal offence has been committed. This includes offences such as assault, harassment, murder, theft and criminal damage motivated by prejudice.
Hate incidents may or may not be a criminal offence. It doesn't matter if you're not sure, report it to the police. We take all reports of hate incidents seriously.
You can call 101 at any time to report an incident, whether you were the victim or a witness. Always dial 999 if there is a crime in action or an immediate threat to life.

Village news 23 March 2018 Another opportunity for Uffington to be on TV!
Banijay Productions are developing a TV series on how public art can bring a community together. They are looking for small villages with heritage & history, fantastic stories & amazing people. The prize - a privately funded piece of public art for the community that will become a landmark.
I have registered an interest so would anyone like to lead the project or join me as part of a working group? £174,000 grant given for advice and transport support in Wantage
People needing independent advice and help with transport around the Wantage area will continue to receive vital support thanks to a grant for an advice centre from Vale of White Horse District Council. The Wantage Independent Advice Centre (WIAC) offers advice and transport to people in and around Wantage, Grove and Faringdon. The centre was founded in 1971 with a small group of volunteers providing an information service and advice from a small office in Falcon Court. After a spell in Mill Street in the 1980s, WIAC moved to its current home in Market Place, Wantage in 1995. It now has around 110 volunteers. Now all this good work has been supported by a three-year partnership grant of £58,000 per year from 2018/19 to 2020/21 by Vale of White Horse District Council. Pupils and parents at King Alfred's Academy are set to take part in a special event aimed at highlighting the dangers of underage drinking. False claims of Telephone Preference Service:
Fraudsters are cold-calling victims, falsely stating that they are calling from one of the well-known UK telecommunication service providers. They call victims claiming to provide a 'Telephone Preference Service' - an enhanced call-barring service, which includes barring international call centres. The fraudsters ask victims to confirm/provide their bank account details, informing them that there is a one-off charge for the service. Victims instead see monthly debits deducted from their accounts, which they have not authorised. The fraudsters
often target elderly victims.
In all instances, direct debits are set up without following proper procedure. The victim is not sent written confirmation of the direct debit instruction, which is supposed to be sent within three days. On occasions when victims attempted to call back, the telephone number provided by the fraudster was either unable to be reached or the victim's direct debit cancellation request was refused. During 2017, there were 493 Action Fraud Reports relating to this fraud.
Protect yourself: - There is only one Telephone Preference Service (TPS). The TPS is the only official UK 'do-not-call' register for opting out of live telesales calls. It is FREE to sign-up to the register. TPS never charge for registration. You can register for this service at http://www.tpsonline.org.uk.
- You will receive postal confirmation of genuine direct debits. If you notice unauthorised payments leaving your account, you should contact your bank promptly.
- Always be wary of providing personal information, or confirming that personal information the caller already claims to hold is correct. Always be certain that you know who you talking to. If in doubt hang up immediately.

Help us tackle online child abuse
"You don't have to do anything anyone online tells you – whether you know them or not".
This powerful message from a victim of online child abuse is at the heart of the second phase of our Hidden Harm campaign, which we're running in partnership with the NSPCC. Over the next three weeks we will be raising awareness of online child abuse, particularly around online grooming and sexual exploitation. To mark the launch of this phase of the campaign, we're sharing the true story of 12-year-old Ellie who built up a friendship via social media with someone claiming to be a 15-year-old boy. The person she was speaking to was in fact a man in his forties who ended up sexually assaulting her numerous times. Watch Ellie's story on our website.
Detective Superintendent Nick John, Head of Thames Valley Police's Protecting Vulnerable People Unit, said: "Ellie's story is a powerful example of how something as simple as accepting a friend request from a person you don't know online can escalate into something with serious consequences. The internet is a huge part of most of our lives, especially for the younger generation and, while it brings a great deal of positive opportunities, unfortunately it can be misused by some people. This campaign isn't about scaring people or telling them not to let their children use the internet. It's about making everyone aware of the potential risks associated with children being online, ensuring they can spot the signs that may indicate a child is being abused and educating everyone on ways we can all help to keep them safe. Keeping children safe from harm is everyone's responsibility and we are very pleased to be partnering with the NSPCC for this element of the campaign."

Village news 16 March 2018 Singers wanted!
Anyone who enjoys singing and who would like to join the Uffington Singers at the service on Easter Sunday 1st April at 10:00 am in St. Mary's Church, then you are most welcome to come to rehearsals in church on Wednesdays, 14th, 21st and 28th March at 7:30 pm for about 1 hour. We are singing an anthem and familiar traditional hymns - scores provided - nothing too challenging!

RIDGEWAY - Thirty two applications for definitive map modification orders to upgrade restricted byways to byways open to all traffic status
The applications by trail riders (4x4s) to be exempted from the restrictions on all motor vehicles on the Ridgeway has been resolved. The trail riders have now conceded they do not have evidence to support their case so we need no more reports from users of the Ridgeway, and I believe the Ridgeway is certain to prohibit the trail riders. Please thank all who wrote in response to the OCC consultation.

Tomorrow (Saturday), starting at 10.00 am, is the Jubilee Field tidy and Litter Pick day in the village, so I will be making enough warming soup for everyone. Voluntary and community groups across the district are being invited to tell everyone the difference they have made to their communities – and the best will win new awards thanks to Vale of White Horse district council. The council is sponsoring an award for the first time this year - for the Best Group in the Vale of White Horse. The awards are part of the prestigious annual Oxfordshire Charity and Volunteer Awards – co-ordinated by Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action. The winners will be announced in Oxford on 5 June 2018.
