A half way break was enjoyed by all with time to enjoy the views and the little church decorated by the Arts and Crafts Group in the early 1900's. For October's walk we are repeating a walk from Ashdown House which was led by Fenella and Carl Oberman. Wednesday 2nd October 9:30, meeting initially at Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, for car shares. Uffington Baulking and Woolstone Minibus Association - Annual General Meeting
The AGM will take place at 7.30 pm on Monday 14th October 2019 in Tom Brown's School Museum. All villagers are most welcome to attend. The association needs new volunteers, and anybody who can spare a morning a month to drive one of our community shopping services to Wantage or Faringdon, or help with our administration, will find the meeting a good opportunity to meet people and hear more about the association.

Across our group we desperately need more leaders to ensure we can keep beaver, cub, scout and explorer groups going providing fabulous, exciting programmes for young people in Uffington, Stanford and the surrounding areas.

Lead theft from the roof of St Mary's Church Uffington
On the morning of the 6th September it was discovered that a portion of the lead had been stripped from the roof of St Mary's Church. Whilst the lead had been stripped and rolled up, only a small proportion had been taken, so we assume that the perpetrators had been disturbed. We are not sure when this incident happened. Rectification is going to cost close to £3,000.
To carry away a significant amount of lead will need a sizeable van or truck. Theft of lead from historic churches has been happening across many local churches in recent years. Police caught one vehicle carrying drainage pipes into which the rolled lead was inserted. If you see a van or truck parked by the church, or contractors you do not recognise seemingly working on their own in the churchyard, particularly during the evenings or early mornings, please do not assume it is on official business. Please notify the Police.

Knife Crime Awareness Week This runs from 16 September – Sunday 22 September.
During that time Thames Valley Police, along with other forces will be taking part in a variety of activities designed to challenge and reduce the threat of knife crime. This includes:

You can safely deposit any type of knife or bladed article in our red amnesty bin between Monday 16 and Sunday 22 September. This is the ideal time to dispose of these items that you are not sure what to do with. If you have any such items, please bring them down to Abingdon Police Station where the bin is located by the front counter.

Village news 13 September 2019 The Teapot Tearoom – Saturday 14 September Delighted that Julie Grose who is a Sculptural Blacksmith will be bringing along her mobile blacksmithing forge to my tea garden on Saturday September 14th. Come along and 'Have a Go' at blacksmithing. Taster blacksmithing sessions will last for approx.30 mins and cost £30. This will include having a go at hammering and following Julie's instruction to make a finished piece that you can take away. Sessions will be on a 'first come first served' basis. Ages allowed are 8+. Students can make one item from a list of a spiral keyring/pendant, an 's' hook or a bottle opener. Sessions will run from 11.00 am till 4.30pm.
Anyone wanting a go must wear suitable footwear (covering their feet) and suitable clothing, such as a shirt to cover arms from hot scale and any coke or metal debris. The Vale and Downland Museum is looking for a new Trustee
The Museum is operated as a company limited by guarantee which is also a registered charity. Trustees are directors of the company. The existing Board of Trustees has the power to co-opt an additional Trustee which it wishes to do. In considering potential new Trustees the Board would take into account previous relevant experience such as running a museum or managing a company, and professional skills such as the law, accountancy or architecture.

From OCC - Suicide Prevention Survey
Oxfordshire residents that have been affected by suicide are urged to give their feedback to help shape a suicide prevention strategy. Between 2016 and 2018 there were a total of 155 deaths by suicide in Oxfordshire. Of these, 126 of these were men, which means that deaths in men outnumbered those in women by 4:1.
In Oxfordshire there is a determination to reduce the number of deaths by suicide. The Oxfordshire Suicide Prevention Multi-Agency Group formed in 2014 and brings together public, private and charity sector organisations, all of whom are committed to suicide prevention. The Oxfordshire suicide prevention group is about to revise its action plan and develop a strategy and wants to hear from people in Oxfordshire who have been affected by suicide or who may have had suicidal thoughts themselves.
There is a determination to reduce the numbers of death by suicide therefore we are asking residents to complete the survey, to help achieve this understanding, at: www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/suicidepreventionsurvey

Residents reminded to respond to their household enquiry form
Residents who haven't responded to their yellow 'Household Enquiry' form are being urged to do so as soon as possible. Last month, South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils sent a yellow letter to all homes across the two districts requiring people to confirm everyone over the age of 16 who currently lives in their property. The councils need this information to make sure everyone who is eligible to vote is able to do so in any forthcoming elections, and are sending out yellow reminder letters to roughly 43,000 homes they are yet to hear from. Important – by law, each household must confirm their details, even if they are correct. Anyone who fails to do so could be fined up to £1,000. More information here:

Beggars. TVP South and Vale have been made aware of beggars in Wantage, Wallingford and Thame town centres. Before handing over any money, please consider whether your spare change will be able to make a real change. We believe that offering shelter, emergency food, clothing and specialist support for substance abuse is a bigger help than giving money to those begging on the street, and we work with a number of local organisations and the local council to help those in need on our streets.

Appeal for Witnesses Following a Burglary to a Business in Shrivenham
Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a burglary in the High Street, Shrivenham. The incident took place around 00.30am on the 10th September when unknown offenders broke into the One Stop Shop. Two offenders were seen wearing dark clothing with their faces and hands covered. A silver BMW estate was also seen. A sledgehammer was used to break in and then offenders loaded a large builder's bag into the BMW and drove off.
Please could you check any CCTV if you live in the area. Please look out for the suspects and the silver BMW estate. If you have any information about this incident please report it on the Thames Valley Police website, or call 101, quoting reference 43190279202.
