We will charge a fee of £5 per bin, this must be able to be lifted on to the back of our truck. Soil is not included for tipping although we do offer a removal service for that type of waste. If you would like your brown bin emptied please contact us and we would be more than happy to get you booked in.. Call 07759 000013   (Editor's note: No guarantees as to performance are given or implied – but, see below.)   Vale District Council news Garden waste collections restart next week. The temporary pause to the garden waste service is coming to an end in South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse very soon, with collections getting underway for some residents in the districts as early as next week.  The service was paused to ensure rubbish, recycling and food waste collections weren't affected during the ongoing and well documented national shortage of HGV drivers. The driver shortage is still an issue for the councils' waste contractor, Biffa, but the council has agreed a new temporary arrangement for garden waste collections that requires fewer drivers, which means Biffa can resume the service sooner.  To make up for the disruption to the service the council will be extending customers' current subscription to the service by three months – they will do this by delaying the collection of the customers' next Direct Debit payments by three months.  The temporary arrangement means that fortnightly garden waste collections will change to take place every four weeks, but subscribers to the service will be able to leave twice as much garden waste out as normal. This temporary arrangement will be reviewed at the end of October to see if normal service can resume.  Customers will still get their brown bins emptied on the same day of the week as normal. If, for example, a customer's bins are usually emptied on a Monday, their brown bin will still be emptied on a Monday under a new temporary garden waste timetable, but they will be emptied once every four weeks, instead of every two weeks.    The councils are sending out more than 50,000 letters and emails this week to their garden waste customers explaining the situation in more detail, along with a copy of the temporary timetable.  Garden waste will be collected in the same weeks as recycling as normal. This means garden waste collections will restart in some parts of the Vale on 27 September.  The webpages providing more details are:  whitehorsedc.gov.uk/gardenwastecollectionchanges    Any residents who do not wish to renew their current subscription, will continue to receive garden waste collections for three months after the subscription was originally due to end.   Food waste collections will continue to take place weekly, and recycling and rubbish collections will continue to take place fortnightly as normal.    The councils' planning processes. If you are not already a member of the local scheme which arranges and coordinates deliveries, and usually offers a helpful discount, please contact Paul Armishaw at: armishawpaul@gmail.com  So, as it is now officially Autumn it seems timely to look at oil deliveries for this coming winter.   We have all heard about the possible impact of the high gas and electricity prices and driver shortages and unfortunately oil supplies and deliveries are not immune to these problems.   For oil customers there is a knock on effect of the late and condensed harvest that the farmers have had this year.  Normally oil depots would be in the process of cleaning out their lorries normally used to deliver diesel to farmers with, ready to take the kerosene for oil customers, however this year, they have not been able to complete this yet and this has had a knock on effect on lead times.  Oil suppliers are also struggling with driver shortages. So all in all there does feel like quite a few unknowns in the market at the moment.   Therefore, we cannot stress highly enough at this point how important it will be this winter to ensure that you have enough oil to last for at least 14 days supply.  This in reality for most will mean that you should not allow your tank to fall below about 12" of oil.    We are not suggesting panic buying, but to please keep a check on your oil tank and oil levels and place your order as soon as you are able.   With this in mind we would suggest the following winter precautions: Check your oil tanks. Fuel companies are becoming increasingly fussy about the condition of oil tanks and will not supply if the driver is in any doubt.  Now is the time to check them for access, condition and general maintenance.  I have attached details of what to look for and also where to go for further advice:   https://mcusercontent.com/c90a1a7b6d1f693a28c947f92/files/b5e218c2-b6e0-008a-5124-285ca045c5b5/Checking_oil_tanks.pdf Ensure your boiler is serviced regularly.  Ensure that the engineer also checks the pipes back to the tank from the boiler and he should also check the filters at the base of the tank Oil Monitors. These are not always as accurate as you might think and can go wrong.  We would suggest you physically dip your tank with a stick to gauge the level and then check with your meter to ensure that it is still reading accurately Usage. We can all be caught out by how much oil we use when a cold snap hits and now that people are working from home more, oil consumption will increase. Many residents will be aware that Britchcombe Farm has been sold recently, including the farmhouse, farm buildings and c140 acres of farmland, which include some of the fields used for camping.  It has come to our attention that the purchaser is Lovat Holiday Parks, a firm which offers holiday homes for rent or purchase. More information here:  Britchcombe Farm (lovatparks.com) and whilst information on Britchcombe is non-existent, you can see the type and scale of their other sites.   The owner has already submitted some preparatory planning applications to clarify the status of the 'camping fields'. We are concerned that Lovat Holiday Parks may be preparing to convert some or all of the former rather low-key, summer only, informal camping fields into the sort of holiday locations pictured on the website and that an attempt may be made to convert Britchcombe Farm into the sort of over-developed holiday site which would be inappropriate in this very sensitive location.   To ensure a coordinated response to any such application, a working group has been formed to monitor activity on the Britchcombe Farm site. The group is comprised of residents of Uffington and Woolstone and representatives of other local organisations and entities, and is chaired by the Chairman of Uffington Parish Council – Mike Oldnall. The Clerk to Woolstone Parish Meeting, Sarah, has volunteered to act as Secretary to the group; any queries should be addressed to woolstone.parish.meeting@gmail.com   The working group is now gathering as much information as possible, including the relevant planning law. It is, of course, well aware that Britchcombe Farm is located in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is adjacent to the internationally known, National Trust owned, heritage sites of White Horse Hill and Dragon Hill, all of which offer a considerable degree of protection from development.  More information will be issued as it becomes available.   Uffington Farmers Market This Sunday, from 10.00 am to 12.30.     Jubilee Field Tidy Save the date: The autumn Jubilee Field tidy will be held on the weekend of 6/7 November.   Vale District Council news Call for Vale of White Horse to hold extraordinary council meeting. To all Town and Parish Council clerks. I would like to share with all Parishes and Town Councils across the Vale of White Horse that on Monday I wrote to the Chair of the Council to call an extraordinary full council meeting to address the many issues around the suspension of the Garden Waste service and "get a grip" of the services expected by residents.  From the poor communication, no plan for restoration of service, and the fact that residents are still getting billed and having money taken from their accounts is an issue that needs to be addressed urgently.   It is my intention by calling this meeting that residents and local Parish/Town Councils can have a voice and that steps are urgently taken to restore a form of service and clear the backlog given the current national shortage. You can see details on our website by clicking this link   County news Steep rises in COVID cases in Oxfordshire's 17- and 18-year olds (issued on 6/9/2021). Young people aged 16 to 18 in Oxfordshire are being reminded that the COVID vaccine is available to them after a whopping 227 per cent rise in cases among 17 and 18-year-olds in the space of just a week. The rise in cases – with 396 cases recorded in people at these two ages – has contributed to a week-on-week rise of 32 per cent in cases overall in the county.   Ansaf Azhar, Oxfordshire County Council's Director of Public Health said: "Cases are now on a very substantial upward trend again in the county and the need for people to be cautious in their daily behaviour and get vaccinated remains very important. Notably, there's been an exceptional increase in cases among those aged 17 and 18 over the course of just one week. We know that many young people are keen to come forward and get the vaccine as soon as possible. We urge you to look out for grab-a-jab clinics and for communication from your GP or to book through the National Booking System if you are eligible.   While we know that most young people are less likely to suffer badly from COVID – there always remains a chance – we do know that young people can still pass it onto those in older age groups, and those at a higher risk of complications. Enrych supports adults with physical disabilities to escape isolation and loneliness, by taking part in leisure and learning activities through our volunteer befriending service.   As you can imagine, the last year has been particularly difficult for people with disabilities and many of the adults that we're meeting have had little to no contact with others and have struggled to leave the house unaided. It's also been a particularly challenging time for us to promote our services and to recruit volunteers. With that in mind, I'd be extremely grateful to you if you could spread the word throughout your local parish that we're in desperate need of volunteers at the moment. We're looking for people who would be willing to spend up to an hour a week befriending one of our members and taking part in an activity with them.
