The council has approved a planning application, reference P24/V0517/HH, for development work at the following location: Gibbons Cottage Broad Street Uffington Faringdon. Speedwatch. About two years ago, the residents of Uffington voted by a significant majority for a 20 mph speed limit in the village, to deter the large number of motorists speeding. The only way to monitor the implementation of the new speed limit, and to ensure that a number of speeding vehicles (80 in the last 12 months) are reported to the Police, is the Speedwatch initiative.
On several occasions recently, the Speedwatch warning sign on one of the roads into the village has been turned round. This is a pointless and very petty, childish, thing to do and possibly encourages speeding. Would the person concerned please stop doing it.
Should anybody know who is doing this, or see somebody in the process, please inform the Parish Council.

Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize 27 and 28 April 2024. The 8th annual Swire Ridgeway Arts Prize, organised by The Friends of the Ridgeway, is on this coming weekend in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, 10 am to 5 pm, admission free. The theme this year is "Signs and symbols along the Ridgeway," for artworks in four categories: wall art, sculpture, photography and writing. Most of the exhibits will be for sale.
Uffington Wed Walk - May 1st - Badbury Clumps Bluebells, Great Barn, and Badbury Hill House. Hi Everyone. It is May! So traditionally it has to be bluebells. May's Walk will be a circular walk with time to admire the bluebells at Badbury Clumps, the Tithe Barn and Badbury Hill House.
Meeting as always initially at the Uffington Village Hall car park, SN7 7SE, for car sharing at 9:20 to set off at 9:30. Alternatively for those who prefer to drive to the start of the walk it will commence from the Great Barn in Great Coxwell at approx 9:50. Would suggest parking in the village and walking through to the Barn as parking outside the Barn can be limited.

WESLEY STACE, BAULKING, SATURDAY MAY 18TH. With 3 weeks to go tickets are half gone for Wesley's show at the church. As an added treat he will be performing with a previous co-conspirator of his, the singer/songwriter David Lewis, and the show will be opened by local musician Lisa Doscher.
I'm beginning to think there isn't much Wesley has not been involved in. Along with a successful music career he has written 4 novels and curates a regular entertainment show from various cities in the USA called the Cabinet of Wonders - www.cabinetofwonders.com that airs on national public radio in the States. It has recently passed its 100th episode and, through it, he has worked with a host of great musicians and authors like Salman Rushdie. When he gets back to the USA, after the UK tour, he accompanies the great Loudon Wainwright 111 on a tour of the eastern seaboard.

"Am I Being Unreasonable?" Lookout Point and Copbury Productions are making another six-part series for BBC1's returning drama "Am I Being Unreasonable?"
We are returning to Uffington to film at two properties off the High Street. Our proposed filming dates are on Tuesday 23rd of April to Friday 26th April, including on two occasions into the early hours.
Similar to our previous visit, we would like to park essential vehicles as close to our filming locations as possible. Please note that some of our vehicles will remain onsite overnight for the duration of filming. We'll maintain access to driveways unless otherwise arranged. Our very friendly locations and security team will be available 24/7 should you have any concerns. We are in contact with Oxfordshire County Council who are aware of our intended plans. We will be having traffic management on site on Thursday 25th of April. This is not a road closure, but just to manage the flow of traffic while our film crew are filming close to the road.

Cold Caller Warning from Trading Standards. Residents are being warned to be wary of cold callers or leaflets offering to do garden clearances, tree cutting and work to roofs and gutters. Oxfordshire County Council's trading standards team is encouraging caution if anyone knocks and offers to start work immediately, particularly if they are pushy or claim that urgent repairs are required. Each year, springtime and the start of the growing season results in an increase in offers to assist with gardening. Here are some top tips from Oxfordshire County Council's trading standards team: - If it is out of the blue, it's not for you! Don't agree to work from an unsolicited, cold call.
- Be aware of 'alarm bell' tactics, claims such as – 'I was working in the area and saw that your garden/roof needed urgent attention'; 'we are working at one of your neighbours' and we have some material left over'; 'I can take you to the bank/cashpoint to get the money'.
- Take five to stop fraud. Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe. Trust your instincts.
- If you want some work undertaken, get a number of detailed quotes in writing, including full contact details and a detailed breakdown of exactly what work will be done.
- Be cautious about any requests for large deposits. For larger work, agree when staged payments will be paid and what work should be completed before any money is handed over. And stick to what is agreed.
- Check with friends and family for trusted recommendations and consider a trading standards' approved trader, from the Buy with Confidence scheme.
- Consider learning more about how scams work and how you can protect yourself and others, by becoming a Friend Against Scams.

Oxfordshire County Council impersonation scam. And another, shared by our colleague in Oxford City. We have learned of a new scam which is affecting older people in Oxfordshire. The basis of the scam is that someone calls saying they are from the County Council and are completing a means test as part of a care assessment. The 'assessment' is completed on the phone and at the end of it the caller asks for a fee of £150. We know of one person who has experienced this but scammers make their living from doing these kinds of things over and over.
Please be vigilant to such things. Means tests are a standard part of a council assessment which make this approach particularly credible. If you have any concerns please call the Oxfordshire County Council Adult Social and Health Care Team on 0345 050 7666 Option 2.
£6.7 million lost to Ticket Fraud in 2023. New data released today by Action Fraud reveals £6.7 million was lost to ticket fraud last year. https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ticketfraud
Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, has launched a ticket fraud awareness campaign, warning people to be alert to fraudsters trying to catch out people planning for popular and sold-out events. Last year more than 8,700 people reported they had been a victim ticket fraud, with a total of £6.7 million lost. This works out to an average loss of £772 per victim.
How to protect yourself from ticket fraud: - Only buy tickets from the venue's box office, the promoter, an official agent or a well-known and reputable ticket exchange site.
- Avoid paying for tickets by bank transfer, especially if buying from someone unknown. Credit card or payment services such as PayPal give you a better chance of recovering the money if you become a victim of fraud.
- The password you use for your email account, as well as any other accounts you use to purchase tickets, should be different from all your other passwords. Use three random words to create a strong and memorable password, and enable 2-step verification (2SV).
- Be wary of unsolicited emails, texts or adverts offering unbelievably good deals on tickets.
- Is the vendor a member of Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers (STAR)? If they are, the company has signed up to their strict governing standards. STAR also offers an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution service to help customers with outstanding complaints. For more information visit star.org.uk/buy_safe.
Report ticket fraud. If you feel at all suspicious, report the email to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) at report@phishing.gov.uk. For more advice on how to stay secure online, please visit cyberaware.gov.uk.

LAUNCH OF THE NEW UBW COMMUNITY MINIBUS – VISIT US AT THE 21 APRIL FARMERS' MARKET. The UBW Minibus Association is delighted to announce that our replacement minibus will be delivered on 12 April. We are grateful to the White Horse Show Trust, Oxfordshire County Council and the Connected Communities Fund for their support in making this possible.
The new minibus has many features that will enhance the riding experience for both drivers and passengers and, to give people the opportunity to see for themselves, we will be bringing the new minibus along to the 21 April Uffington Farmers' Market. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US.
The UBW Minibus is a community facility run on a non-profit basis. The minibus runs every Wednesday and Friday morning to Wantage from Uffington via Kingston Lisle, Sparsholt and Childrey, with calls at Woolstone, Baulking and Westcot whenever requested. Additionally, it is available for private use by local individuals and groups at a cost of just £20 per day plus 90p per mile.

GENERAL
Trust for Oxfordshire's Environment is recruiting a Community Grants Manager. TOE Local Environment Fund distributes grants to not-for-profit organisations and community groups undertaking environmental projects. We are delighted that the Local Environment Fund is going from strength to strength, with more funders contributing plus a growing number of applicants. The number of ongoing projects we now have at any one time has risen to 40-50 so we are recruiting someone to help me manage this important part of TOE's work.
Based at our office in Wallingford, with some home working and site visits, this new post will support the identification, appraisal, development and monitoring of community-led projects funded through the Local Environment Fund to ensure they have the maximum sustainable impact.
