WHAT'S ON - IN & AROUND UFFINGTON
28 September - FFF&B Ploughing Society Annual Ploughing Match & Country Show cancelled. Please note that tomorrow's event has been CANCELLED, due to the recent extreme weather conditions.
Zumba class. Nancy is running a Zumba class in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall on Wednesdays at 11.15am. If people would like more info or to book their place, please contact her by email at: zumbanancy@yahoo.com or phone: 07880 727314.
Uffington Wednesday Walk 2nd October - Ashdown House Circular Walk. Given the recent wet weather we have chosen the walk from Ashdown House RG17 8RE which we hope will keep us on higher drier ground. Meeting at Uffington Village Hall car park SN7 7RA at 9:20 for car sharing and a 9:30 start. The walk will commence at the National Trust car park, just to the north of Ashdown House, at approximately 9:50. The turning off the B4000 to the car park is signposted.
We will follow an anti-clockwise route via Alfred's Castle then along the western edge of Upper Wood. After crossing the B4000 we will go up steeply to the flagpole on top of Weathercock Hill, for wonderful views over Ashdown House and the surrounding countryside, after which we will descend by another path to the car park. Length approximately 4.5 miles.

Uffington Museum: Recording Military Aircraft Local Crash Sites - Workshop on Saturday 5th October 10:30 – 12:30 Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall Uffington SN7 7RE. Our current exhibition Wellington Bomber DV595 is revealing stories about other local crash sites. Join us to capture these memories and stories and use maps and air photographs to identify and record more locations. Booking is essential as places are limited. To book your place or get in touch if you have any questions or information to share and cannot attend the workshop, please email janegolding57tt@gmail.com
Please note we will not be investigating the physical sites on the ground. All military aircraft crash sites in the UK are controlled by the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.

Friendly, accessible to all, community walk. Meet at Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, to leave at 1.00 pm.
Thursday 16 October 1 - 2pm and Thursday 4 December 1 - 2pm. Everyone welcome. Tea/coffee etc in the hall at VCI Pop-Up Cafe to finish. This walk has been organised by White Horse Medical Practice and will be led and supported by our volunteers.

GENERAL
Uffington Gorse will be closed to the public on Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th September 2024. Forestry work will be taking place within the wood in order to remove those trees that are blocking the canal/towpath and those that have the potential to cause a safety issue in relation to the woodland paths or tracks.
While the work is underway, the woods will be closed for safety reasons during daylight hours on Saturday 28th September and Sunday 29th September 2024. Although our main focus is to restore the Wilts and Berks Canal and its towpath within Uffington Gorse, our commitment is to maintain and improve safe public access to the woods itself whenever possible.
Benefice Draw results. We held the 1Q24-25 season draw for the Benefice 200 Club on 22 September, following the Blessing of the Animals Service at 10.00 at Uffington. The winners were as follows:

Oil Scheme Update for Autumn from Community First Oxfordshire. Autumn has arrived! With turning leaves, cooling temperatures, darker nights and winter approaching, it may be a good time to check how much heating oil you have. As we head towards the winter months, typically prices increase, and delivery time frames extend but Affinity will give you a price before your order is placed and the current delivery times for orders is up to five working days.
Our only advice at present is not to leave it until winter to fill up your tank and please keep a check on your oil tank and oil levels and place your order as soon as you are able. Safer Roads Information. We would now like to share the results of the second quarter of 2024. We prioritise enforcement and education for drink and drug driving, the non-wearing of seatbelts, excessive speed and driving whilst distracted. We create reports on a quarterly basis to share with our policing teams and partner agencies.

Village news 20 September 2024 UFFINGTON PARISH COUNCIL
Defibrillator - Awareness Training. Save the date – Thursday 31 October. It is some years since our defibrillators were installed in Uffington, Baulking and Woolstone; memories fade and many new residents have moved in, in that time. Tory and Bob Russ have kindly volunteered to offer refresher awareness training on defibrillators at 7.30 pm on Thursday 31 October in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall. Defibrillators can be life-saving and if somebody has a sudden heart problem, it may be too late to learn! So, take advantage of this free training, which will be open to all residents of the UBW villages.
The 68 Bus Service. Oxfordshire County Council have announced that the current contract for the 68 service will conclude in March 2025 and that they are hopeful that new contracts will commence, following re-tendering, on 30 March 2025.
OCC statistics show that uptake is currently low, with a snap shot in June showing a daily average of 3 passengers only from Uffington. It is government policy to persuade people to use public transport, but it takes time to change public attitudes and this service has not been running for long. An ageing population will benefit from greater access to public transport as time goes by. So, Use it or Lose it! In Uffington we are fortunate to have the UBW minibus. The Parish Council believes that the UBW bus and the 68 service cater for different markets, but there is evidence that residents can usefully 'mix and match' the two services to suit individual requirements. The Parish Council has therefore responded to OCC that it remains in full support of both services, and would welcome continuation next year of the 68 service.
WHAT'S ON - IN & AROUND UFFINGTON
Wednesdays. As usual the art class is still running on a Wednesday morning at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall 10.30-12noon. We are always keen to welcome new members, art supplies are provided and the class is open to all abilities.
Thursdays. Seated Exercises runs on Thursday mornings at the hall 10.30-11.30.
Both classes are proving popular with those who come so it would be great to welcome members. Classes are free.
Bring your pets to Church on Sunday 22 September! St Mary's will be holding their first Pet Service for some years, at 10.00 am this Sunday in Uffington Churchyard, weather permitting, or inside if not. All creatures great and small are most welcome!! Come and have your animal blessed. Horses are more easy to accommodate if the weather is fine as we will be able to hold the service outside.
White Horse WI – Wednesday 25th September at 7.30pm. Welcome back ladies, I do hope you are having the most wonderful summer! I cannot believe how quickly it is passing. I just wanted to say hello and remind everyone that the next White Horse WI meeting is on Wednesday 25th September at 7.30pm when our talk for the evening is 'Hearing Dogs for the Deaf'. For those of us who are dog lovers, we will also get to meet a service dog! Lisa

118 e-scooters and e-bikes seized in three months across the Thames Valley. From 1 June to 8 September 2024, we seized 118 e-scooters and e-bikes, with 21 of these seizures occurring since the beginning of September. Unfortunately, over the past couple of weeks we have seen two serious incidents involving e-scooters in the Thames Valley, demonstrating why our ongoing work around this issue is so important. Preventing keyless car theft. Don't let thieves get an easy ride. Follow these rules to protect your keyless vehicle from thieves. Cars with keyless entry unlock automatically when the key comes within a short distance of the car. This can be from inside a pocket or bag. If you have to push a button on your car key to open your car, you don't have keyless entry. Keyless car theft or 'relay theft' is when a device is used to fool the car into thinking the key is close by. This unlocks the car and starts the ignition.
Thieves only need to be within a few metres of your car key to capture the signal, even if it's inside your home. This means that even if your car and home are secure, thieves can still unlock, start and steal your car. How to protect your keyless entry car: - When at home keep your car key (and the spare) well away from the car.
- Put the keys in a screened or signal-blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag and check if the bag or pouch is still working every few months.
- Reprogramme your keys if you buy a second hand car.
- Turn off wireless signals on your fob when it's not being used.
