Uffington Lawn Tennis Club Annual Tournament
We hope you're well and managing to enjoy some play on the club courts, despite the unsettled summer we've had. We wrote before advising our Annual Tournament would be on Sunday 10 Sep, and have had some expressions of interest. Could we now ask those who wish to play, or join socially, to sign up using the following link: Entry Form. Could we also ask you, if at all possible, to pay online at the point of submitting your entry. Please note the points on the form that there is absolutely no need to have a partner, all abilities are welcome, as are members and non-members alike. We will draw the playlist on the day, so it really is a free-for-all, with no maximum number of players, and we really hope to encourage as many as possible to join us for a fun afternoon together doing the sport we all enjoy, and using the opportunity to socialise together. HOUSEHOLD SECURITY
Over this bank holiday weekend there will be a lot of unknown visitors to the area and over previous such periods there have been several burglaries. At a time when it is usually warm, many windows and doors will be left open so it is particularly important that residents take additional steps to ensure that their properties and possessions are properly secured overnight or when you are away from home to reduce the risk of being burgled.
POLITE NOTICE – NOISY EVENTS
Following the recent unannounced disturbance from the fields down the Fawler Road on Saturday 19 August, this is a timely request to ask that all residents who are planning an event that is likely to disturb other residents let people know what the likely disturbance will be, when and for how long. In licensing events the Vale does not let the Parish Council know what they have licensed so we cannot publicise such happenings so it is up to individuals, as a matter of manners and consideration for others, to let those likely to be affected know.
Village news 25 August 2023 Uffington Parish Council
Attempted break-in - St Mary's Church, Uffington. Crime reference No: 43230378658. There was an attempted break-in at the West end door of St Mary's early on Wednesday morning, 23rd August (we believe at about 04.20am). Fortunately, they did not get in but some damage was caused. If anyone saw anything / anybody in the vicinity of the Church at that time, please contact Thames Valley Police under the a/m reference or let me know, and I will pass it on.
Play equipment on the Jubilee Field. The Parish Council has received a number of representations / requests that the facilities for children on the Jubilee Field should be improved and is addressing these as follows: - A Football goal. This has been requested as the MUGA area with football goals is often being used by children on bikes and scooters and so not available to youngsters wishing to kick a football around. The Parish Council has bought a single, small, movable, football goal which is now installed on the Jubilee Field. With only one goal, there will be no formal football games, for which the Sports Club is available.
- Facilities for older children and the disabled. The Parish Council believes that the younger children are well catered for in the existing play park, but, with the support of David Johnston MP and the Vale District Council, it is now looking into a 'Space Net', new swings (to replace the old ones on the Upper Common side of the Jubilee Field) and a Basket Swing (suitable for disabled children). This will take a little time, not least because this sort of equipment is very expensive and planning permission will be required.

Uffington White Horse Show. If you are looking for a great day out over the August Bank Holiday weekend, please come to the White Horse Show. This family day out runs over the Sunday and Monday, with something for everyone: Professional displays, a flyover by the Battle of Battle Memorial Flight Spitfire on Sunday, falconry, beekeepers, craft and retail, historic cars and vehicles, stationary steam engines, and model boats. More entertainment provided by Professor Crump, Team M.A.D. cycles, Punch & Judy, the Icknield Way Morris Men, the Ukey Dukes and the Wantage Silver Band.

As Oxfordshire's Finds Liaison Officer Edward Caswell will be presenting highlights of the county's archaeological finds, including exciting treasure cases, breaking news and local stories about Uffington and its surrounding parishes held in the ever-expanding Portable Antiquities Scheme database, currently holding 1.5 million finds.
Tickets are £3 for TBSM Friends, £5 for non-Friends, and are available at the door from 1915.

Rural England Prosperity Fund - submit your expression of interest. We're getting in touch to let you know that South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils have secured funding through the government's Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), and we're inviting rural businesses within our districts to submit an expression of interest.
The scheme will close for expressions of interest at 11:59pm on Sunday 3 September. Completed EOIs will help us to understand local demand and will inform the criterion for our final grant scheme, expected to be available in Autumn 2023. Appeal to find wanted man – Ashbury, Oxfordshire. We are appealing for the public's help in tracing a man who is wanted in connection with an assault occasioning grievous bodily harm in Ashbury, Oxfordshire. Cameron O'Malley-Richardson, aged 28, of no fixed abode, is being sought in connection with a violent assault in Wixes Piece at around 1am on 5 August. An altercation took place and the victim, a man in his thirties, was stabbed several times in the head with a broken wine glass. The victim sustained serious injuries that required hospital treatment. He has since been discharged.
O'Malley-Richardson is around 5ft 7ins tall and of slim build. He has shoulder-length, dark brown hair and a patchy beard. He is likely to be wearing grey bottoms and a navy blue hooded-sweatshirt. He is known to frequent supermarkets in Faringdon, and has links to Amesbury, Ashbury and Swindon. He is likely to be sleeping rough in a red tent. If you know where he is or may have seen him, please call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43230347887.

Community groups invited to apply for grant funding from £200,000 fund to help prevent crime. Matthew Barber, Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), has today opened the second of this year's application rounds to the Community Fund. The Community Fund, jointly managed by the PCC and the Chief Constable, helps to prevent crime and keep communities safe. Money for the scheme is created from the proceeds from the sale of items seized from criminals that cannot be returned to their rightful owners.
On today's announcement, Matthew said: "I'm pleased to announce the second round of this year's Community Fund is now open for applications. This round is an exceptional £200,000 and we are delighted to be able to offer community and voluntary groups the chance to apply with the aim of reducing crime in our communities."

Thames Valley Police warns of increase in online shopping fraud on social media. Thames Valley Police is seeing a high number of fraudulent offences involving the selling of items online and through social media.
In the past 13 months, data provided by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau shows that there have been 2,925 victims within the Thames Valley who have been targeted in this particular type of fraud. Village news 16 August 2023 Uffington Parish Council
Another footpath improved! The Parish Council is very pleased to announce that another project to improve access for walkers of all ages to Uffington's footpaths has been completed.
Footpath 4 runs from the centre of the village, behind the Cottage on the Green, in a northerly direction, over the large Network Rail footbridge, to Moor Mill Farm and thence on further to Fernham, Baulking or Shellingford, or returning in an extended loop to the village via Uffington Gorse (Uffington Fox Covert) and the kissing gates on FP 12. All the old stiles on FP 4 in Uffington parish have now been replaced by galvanised kissing gates or self-closing gates.
The Council wishes to thank those organisations which contributed to the funding: - Trust for Oxfordshire's Environment (TOE) with funds from Grundon Waste Management Ltd, from their own funds and through the Landfill Communities Fund,
- White Horse Show Trust,
- Oxfordshire County Council, and the
- Parish Council itself
Also, we thank the landowners concerned for their cooperation throughout, and Noll Countryside Services (of Lambourn) who installed the new gates. There will be more detail in a press release shortly.
Wood chippings available. A quantity of high quality chippings, suitable for use as a mulch or surfacing a path, has been dumped by the footpath into the allotments, on the right as you leave the village on the Fernham Road. Please feel free to take as much as you can!

White Horse Show - car park marshals needed - volunteers will receive free entry to the show! We need to rally as many volunteers as possible to be car park marshals at the White Horse Show on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th August 2023. Volunteers will be needed to stand at entry gates and direct traffic in the car park.
In return for a few hours of your time, the organisers will donate to local charities, including the Uffington school PTA. On top of the donation, all volunteers who take a 2 hour slot in the rota will get free entry to the show. If two family members volunteer you will receive a free family ticket.

Celebration of work starting on new forensics centre for Thames Valley. Thames Valley Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner have marked the start of work on the new forensics centre with a ground-breaking ceremony. Read more on our website.
Thames Valley Police and National Highways operation puts the brakes on 104 traffic offences in one week. Operation Tramline was run by Thames Valley Police's Roads Policing Joint Operations Unit in partnership with National Highways between 7 and 11 August. The road safety operation covered sections of the M40 and M25.
Officers deployed an unmarked HGV tractor unit supplied and funded by National Highways to detect and deal with road traffic offences such as using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt. During the week long operation, a total of 104 traffic offence reports were issued.
