Village maintenance. Further to our information in the Courier magazine, Uffington Parish Council is now seeking tenders from person(s) or companies interested in taking on a one year grounds maintenance contractor role for 'the Council.

Identity Fraud – from an Uffington resident. This week my partner was a victim of identity fraud. We believe the information was taken from our external post box. A bank account was setup in his name with a very large overdraft included. We were lucky and intercepted the card and pin number before it was activated. Fortunately, we have hopefully caught it in time. But I wanted to raise awareness that it could happen. He is very careful with his personal information and does not shop online.

Uffington Village Walk ... with a bus ride - Wednesday 31 January. Happy New Year to Everyone. For our first walk of 2024 we are trying something new and hopefully supporting our new bus service at the same time. Really hope lots of you will join us.
We will meet in Uffington at Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall Car Park at 9:30am, and walk from Uffington through to Childrey via Kingston Lisle, Westcot and Sparsholt. (5 miles), returning by the 68 bus which arrives at 12:48 in Childrey dropping us in Uffington at 13:04. There is a very nice coffee shop for refreshments in Childrey and the bus schedule should allow time for a break here. If we can use our local bus service it will help to maintain the service for villagers who rely on it.
Don't forget your bus pass if you have one. Bus fare for the youthful is £2, dogs are allowed on the bus for a fare of £1 There is seating for 17 and standing room too, so should be plenty of room for all. Looking forward to more enjoyable walks in 2024.

Pancakes - Advance notice. There will be pancakes in aid of ACCESS, our charity in Bangalore, India, supporting the disadvantaged children of quarry workers, on Shrove Tuesday 13th February at 2 Lower Common Cottage, Lower Common, Uffington SN7 7SQ. Please come either between midday and 2pm, or 5.30pm and 8.30pm to enjoy pancakes with both sweet and savoury fillings, with a soft drink or glass of wine, and make a donation to ACCESS. Offers of help to both cook or serve would be much appreciated!

GENERAL
Afghan Refugees. Some Afghan refugees are temporarily being housed in Shrivenham. Their village support group is collecting things to help them at St Alban's church, 18 Ironside Drive, Watchfield, SN6 8RL this Saturday 27 January 9.30-11.30am. They particularly need rice, cooking oil and things for the children: toys, games, colouring materials. They would be very grateful for anything you can provide. Apologies for short notice! Thanks.

Witness Appeal - black Astra From Thames Valley Police:
Witness Appeal - black Astra. Since the 15th January we have received reports across the South and Vale that offenders driving a 5 door black Astra, have been targeting works vans, drilling locks and stealing tools. We believe it has false plates that could be changing.

Power cut - 23 January Electricity shut down.
Scottish and Southern Electricity have notified the Shop that they have to cut off power to about 200 properties in Uffington for about 2 hours, in order to make safe a pole which is currently in danger of falling.
The location of the pole and identity of the properties concerned are not known; the start time was said to c10.30 am this morning.

Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall AGM – Monday 22 January at 7.00 pm. Don't forget the THMH AGM at 7.00pm on Monday evening. The hall has had a second good year, with income covering running costs, which is exactly the time to make sure we do not sit back and take our eye off the ball. If you value the hall as our principal community building for Baulking, Uffington and Woolstone, please come along to the AGM to find out what the Management Committee have been doing and what is planned for 2024. It is also an opportunity to offer help. The AGM is when the Management Committee members are elected and it is when we find out who will stand for another year!

If you are happy to complete a Disclosure and Barring Check (DBS) we would love for you to come and work with our children.
