Change Of Plan for December Walk - Wed Dec 1st
Still looking forward to our walk around the Bishopstone area on Wed 1st December however there is a change to the starting point.
We will meet initially as always in the car park of Uffington Village Hall at 9:20am to arrange car shares for those who wish. Leaving at 9:30 to drive to Ashbury. For those who wish to go directly to Ashbury we will be meeting outside The Rose and Crown pub 9:45.
The walk will now be starting and finishing at the Rose and Crown in Ashbury rather than Bishopstone. This is due to a change of venue for the lunch afterwards. There is plenty of space in the pub car park for those staying for lunch and easy on-street parking elsewhere in Ashbury.
We will still be doing the same planned circular walk but now starting up the hill from Ashbury to the Ridgeway, along and down the Coombe to Bishopstone. We will stop for a short break at the pond in Bishopstone so do bring flasks of coffee or snacks as you wish. Then we will head back to Ashbury via Idstone. The Rose and Crown would like those staying for the lunch to make their choices a week in advance. The White Horse Show Organising Committee Is Looking for A New Secretary.
Would you be at all interested in becoming the secretary for the White Horse Show Organising Committee? The White Horse Show raises money to support local activities and causes. Youth Groups, the minibus, the Village Hall, the School, the Sports Clubs and countless other causes have benefitted over the years. We meet most months on a Thursday evening and the job involves taking abbreviated minutes, sending out the minutes for approval and a monthly calling notice. The committee are a most welcoming bunch, with each responsible for a part of the show. The show runs annually for 2 days on the Sunday and Monday of the August bank holiday weekend. Our current secretary is stepping down after giving sterling service for a long while. If this might interest you, please give me a call to chat this over and see if it might appeal.

Second Hand Sale – Sunday 28 November. We have had the idea of organising a second-hand sale on Sunday 28th November, at 10.00a.m – 1.00pm, in the THMH, Uffington, to make way for the Christmas clutter that always ensues during the festive season. We want to try and make it a community event by also offering cakes and mulled wine for refreshments and donating the monies earned to the church.

Christmas Tree light up. We are joining up with the Uffington Primary School PTA to bring an enhanced Christmas Tree light switch-on, on 1 December, from 5.30 pm, with the lights being switched on at 7.00pm. 'Am I being unreasonable'
The dates for the filming of 'Am I Being Unreasonable' have been confirmed as being in one block of 3 days from 16th - 18th November. The company has delivered letters to all the residents that are likely to be affected and spoken directly to many people. Preparatory work is underway and security will be/have been putting out some cones to try to secure some parking for our equipment vehicles which will be arriving Tuesday morning. Some fake streetlights will be placed around our location for our evening work over the 3 days. These will be powered locally and from an ultra-quiet generator nearby just for the exterior scenes, and will be switched off and made safe overnight.
The hall has been hired for the filming days to facilitate feeding our crew and we have hired some rooms at The Fox and Hounds for cast green rooms and costume and makeup areas.
Uffington Farmers Market. Tomorrow from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm.

You may remember that the village had just initiated a successful Speedwatch group a couple of years ago, when it ground to a halt. After a successful pilot, Speedwatch schemes have re-started in a number of places in TVP area, but not here, yet. More information:

The Parish Council has set some money aside for this and has decided that it would be good for Uffington to register for the new scheme, if there are enough people who would like to get involved. Ideally, we would like a group of about 8 - 10 people (minimum 3 at a time), who should be prepared for some on-line training, and then to turn out from time to time; the most fruitful times previously were early mornings and late afternoons. If you are interested, please respond to this email or contact any member of the Parish Council.
Save your stamps for The Leprosy Mission
As Christmas cards start to drop through your letterbox (and indeed throughout the whole year), please save your stamps and support The Leprosy Mission. Even standard 1st and 2nd class UK ones are welcome. Every year the charity raises tens of thousands of pounds from stamps, coins and other collectibles, which helps to fund its work treating and supporting people who are suffering from this awful disease. Help to reduce landfill, and at the same time raise money for charity. Recycle4charity will recycle your computer ink cartridges and make a donation to the Suited & Booted charity. Black or colour, regular or XL, original or remanufactured ink cartridges are all accepted. Uffington Post Office Stores have kindly agreed to display a collection box, where you can leave them. Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum. Unknown Oxfordshire Officer, killed during the Great War, identified as descendant of William Wordsworth. Remains of an unidentified officer first discovered in Northern France in 2013 were reburied in 2015 as an Unknown Officer of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Museum Volunteers were able to narrow down probable identities to three different officers through research. DNA testing now identifies him as Osmond Bartle Wordsworth, a collateral descendant of poet William Wordsworth. 0800 555 111 - A Number to Remember. Thames Valley Police have frequently repeated that their success in fighting crime is very dependent on the efficient gathering of relevant information – 'criminal intelligence' – from the public. So, we all have a personal stake in helping this process.
The Neighbourhood Watch national website - ourwatch.org.uk – offers ideas of what to look out for under various crime headings. Even those living in peaceful, low-crime areas may occasionally overhear or see something that is suspicious or 'doesn't look right.' Putting together criminal intelligence has been described as a bit like a jigsaw, and even little bits of information can help – by confirming other pieces perhaps. So, it is important that we all report things that we feel could help the police.
We all know that we should immediately call 999 if you see a crime being committed or in an emergency. And you should call 101 to report anything else to the police – or go online to do so. This, of course, involves you in providing your own contact details, and even though these will be treated in complete confidence by the police, sometimes we can be reluctant to 'get involved' to that extent. That is understandable, but we do not want your 'piece of the jigsaw' to be missed. It could be vital!
