Foodbank. The attention of all residents is drawn to the Foodbank collection at the Post Office / Shop. St. Mary's Church is organising the collection at Harvest time and the donations will be given to Grove & Wantage Foodbank at the end of next week. We are also collecting in Church. This is an excellent cause, and your support will be gratefully received.

'Even the Trivial Seems Profound': Seeing England through Betjeman's Eyes
Sir John Betjeman, Poet Laureate, writer and campaigner, loved architecture and the built environment. Nearly forty years after his death his poetic, parochial and personal response is in danger of being forgotten in the face of a more academically-driven art-historical approach. This talk celebrates his topographical writing and television programmes, his loves and hates, his delight in unfashionable and unregarded buildings, especially churches, and the joy of discovering his particular vision of England.
David Meara is a retired Anglican priest who lives in Oxford. He has had a lifelong interest in church art and architecture, especially Monumental Brasses, about which he has written extensively. He is a former President of the Monumental Brass Society and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Tickets £5 (£3 Friends of Tom Brown's School Museum). Wed 5th Oct - Kissing Gate Walk (Uffington/Woolstone) 4 Miles.
Our First Weds Walk for October has been named "The Kissing Gate Walk". We are celebrating yet more kissing gates being installed to make the footpaths of our village more accessible.
Meeting initially @ Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall car park SN7 7SE at 9:30pm on Wed 5th Oct, we will walk to the top of Broad Street by the phone box and proceed to the first of the new gates where we will gather to thank the sponsors and those who enabled the installation of the gates. The walk will then continue through more kissing gates over the two fields in the centre of the village and back towards the Fox and Hounds.
Here, for those who wish to continue with the rest of the walk, we will continue through yet more recently installed kissing gates along footpath 19 towards the hill. Then crossing Broadway towards Woolstone, looping round beyond Woolstone. 4 miles in total. Weather promises to be 17 degrees, sunny intervals with a gentle breeze.

TALK: Botanical Tales from the East – Japanese Gardens
BY: Nicholas Wray, Curator of Bristol Botanic Gardens
Over a thousand years of gardening traditions have created a unique garden style that is far removed from to our western tastes in garden design and the choice of plants This lecture looks at the history and evolution of Japanese gardening styles and highlights some of the key features and links between gardens and Japanese culture. The focus is on gardens in Tokyo, Nara and the cultural capital city of Kyoto.
All meetings in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington, SN7 7SE. Doors open at 7pm and talks commence at 7.30pm. Raffle £1.

From Thames Water. Why is there still a hosepipe ban? - It's rained, but rivers and reservoirs are still low. Hello, we've had a few downpours, so you might be wondering why our hosepipe ban (also known as a Temporary Use Ban) is still in place. The fact is river and reservoirs are still very low for the time of year and we need to plan now so supplies are safe for when summer comes around again. As part of this, we're also working hard to fix leaks – we've grown our workforce to over 200 repair teams, helping us repair 19% more leaks this August compared to last year.
- Pulling together to protect our supplies. We're doing everything we can to prevent wastage through leaks. The summer drought caused pipes to shift in the ground, doubling the number of leaks. Please tell us if you see a leak. We know it's frustrating if you report one and it's not fixed quickly, but we're working hard to do so – our video explains what it takes to carry out the repair. Thank you so much for all your help so far. Our data shows that since we've had the hosepipe ban, and some rain, demand for water across our area is the lowest it's been for five years.
- Water levels at their lowest in 19 years. Despite the ban and the rain, river levels are still well below average, and reservoirs are down by as much as 25% – the lowest level since 2003. We'll need plenty more rain through the autumn and winter to help them recover. That's why it's so important we save as much water as we can now. We'll continue to focus on finding and fixing leaks, and we'll keep the hosepipe ban in place for now.

Village news 16 September 2022 Death of Her Majesty the Queen.
I want to thank all those who helped us set up the place of reflection in the side chapel at St Mary's. The flowers are lovely, thanks to Angela Richings and Jeremy Moss, and many people have been coming, lighting candles, and leaving messages in the condolence book. Please feel free to continue to do this.
All our Churches (Woolstone, Uffington, Baulking and Shellingford) remain open for prayer and reflection. This Sunday we will be celebrating our late Queen, and our new King, in services at Woolstone (9am) and Shellingford (10.15am). You are all most welcome to come and help 'earth' the strange days we are living through.

Garden Birds (From an Uffington resident). It appears that a disease prevalent among finches has sadly affected quite a few goldfinches which feed in our garden (Green Lane area). It seems fairly certain that they are suffering from trichomoniasis. There is a fair bit about it on the Internet, and all the symptoms fit (lethargy, reluctance to fly, difficulty eating). There is no sign of different species having the disease, which is fatal, and this leads us away from thoughts of avian flu.
The advice following an isolated case is to adopt good hygiene practices, but to stop feeding for a few weeks if it is commonplace.
Vale District Council news
Changes to council services on 19 September. The district council will be closed on Monday 19 September for the public holiday to mark the occasion of the Queen's funeral. As the offices will be closed, the books of condolence will not be available to sign that day but will be open again on Tuesday 20 September.
Biffa has confirmed that waste collections will not be going ahead on that day either and so collections next week will take place a day later than scheduled -Tuesday 20 September for Uffington.
Our leisure contractor has also confirmed that all of our leisure centres and facilities will be closed on 19 September. Our emergency out of hours service will be available as normal while the council is closed.
