View this email in your browser Uffington Village News 2 November 2018 Defibrillators The Parish Council is very pleased to announce that an order has been placed for six defibrillators, as a result of the initiative jointly undertaken by Uffington, Baulking and Woolstone. We do not have a firm delivery date yet, but it is anticipated to be within the next 2 to 3 weeks.  Once we have received the defibrillators we will arrange installation (which will probably take a further couple of weeks). They will be installed in the following locations: Uffington: The Fox and Hounds, Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington Sports Club and the telephone box opposite St Mary's Church Baulking: The telephone box opposite St Nicholas Church. Woolstone: The White Horse Inn. The cost of the project is over £11,000 and we are extremely grateful to Cllr Yvonne Constance's Councillor Priority Fund and the White Horse Show Trust; both organisations have made substantial grants to enable this project to proceed.     The donation tins in the village shop, the Fox & Hounds and White Horse Inn, started by Alison & Nicky, will continue, with proceeds used towards advertising the location of the defibrillators; thank you to everybody who has contributed - it is gratifying to see such enthusiastic public support for this project.   As we get closer to installation, please keep your eyes open for information about training; Tory Russ will be running a number of sessions in all three villages. We would like as many people as possible to attend a training session - it could be your relative or friend in need. Dates and locations will be advised.   Uffington Wed Walk 5th December 2018 HI Everyone.  For our December walk on Wed 5th we will be repeating a route from earlier in the year which was very popular. A circular walk from Childrey taking in Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett - five miles.   Meeting as always in the car park of Uffington Village Hall where we will car share to Childrey leaving at 9.30.  For those who would like to meet us in Childrey we will assemble outside the coffee shop.   As it is the last walk of the year we thought it would be pleasant to stop for a coffee in the Childrey coffee shop at the end of the walk.(And as we will have already used up the calories perhaps a seasonal mince pie!) If those of you who would like to stop for a coffee could let me know I will let the coffee shop know numbers in advance. We should finish the walk at about 12.00 in case anyone would like to just come straight to the coffee shop.   Fingers crossed the weather will be dryer next week but we're not expecting to avoid the mud in December in Oxfordshire!  Verity Pamela and Lilly   'Up the Hill Walk' - Wed 12th Dec For those of you who would like to join the 'Up The Hill' gang. The meeting time will be at 9.30 on Wed 12th Dec in the village hall car park. TVP are appealing for witnesses following a burglary overnight on the 23/11 - 24/11 (Fri-Sat). Unknown offenders broke into a barn on the road running through Idstone (near Faringdon) and stole red diesel from a tank. Please review the security of your barns and outbuildings. All villagers are welcome to attend the meeting, and to join the association, which is the only community transport undertaking serving the villages. Please be vigilant around rural beauty spot locations. The Faringdon and Wantage area suffered 8 thefts from vehicles over a 2 day period last week at varying times of the day. This has included theft of registration plates and smashed windows enabling suspects to search through concealed areas of storage/glove boxes within cars. The most recent information suggests offenders were using a dark coloured Volkswagen Golf, however, the suspects are stealing and regularly changing the displayed registration plates. Jeremy Goulston 821143   Uffington Wed Walk 7th November 2018 – Shrivenham Hello Fellow Walkers; for our November walk the Uffington First Wednesday Walking Group will be doing a figure of eight walk from Shrivenham on Wed 7th November. This very pleasant walk, lasting approximately five miles, takes us to the south of Shrivenham alongside the canal. The figure of eight route means we will then pass through Shrivenham again and then north through the church yard onto the beautiful Mid Vale Ridge. We will meet in the car park at Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall Uffington at 9.30 for car sharing to Shrivenham. For those of you who would prefer to meet us in Shrivenham the meeting point is at the bus shelter opposite the Barrington Arms pub, High Street, Shrivenham at 9.45   Hope to see lots of you there.   2nd Wednesday Up The Hill Walk.   All are welcome to join in with our new group on Wed 14th Nov. This is a group started for those among our existing group who wish to walk locally more often and specifically up White Horse Hill. We had a really lovely walk last month in the October sunshine up through Britchcombe Farm along the Ridgeway and down through Woolstone. We will be remembering all those who died in WW1, which ended 100 years ago, especially those from Uffington, Baulking and Woolstone.   Remembrance Service in St Mary's Uffington at 10.00 am, followed by laying of the wreaths at the War Memorial Museum open at end of service until 12.30pm as last opportunity to see the WWI exhibition. Church bells being rung Lighting of the Beacon on the WH Hill at 7.00pm   More detail on the last two items above: The bells of St Mary's will be rung half muffled between 9:30 and 10.00 am as normal for Remembrance Sunday.  Then as part of the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI we will be ringing without muffles at 7:05pm for 15 - 20 minutes.  This is the same time as all the other bells in the country that are taking part.  The National Trust plan for the beacon lighting on WHH is roughly, between 6.45pm and 6.58pm there are a few speeches, the tribute poem reading and then two minutes silence at 6.56pm, this ends with the last post which depending on the player can last between 1 minute to one minute 30 seconds.  The beacon will then be lit by the Deputy Lieutenant at 7pm. This is the last item on the running order apart from watching the beacon.   Beat the winter blues! The criminals claim they've recorded videos of the victim watching adult material by activating their webcam when they visit these websites. What makes this scam so convincing is that the email usually includes a genuine password the victim has used for one of their online accounts. We believe criminals obtain the passwords from data breaches. What to do if you get one of these emails? Don't reply to the email, or be pressured into paying. The police advise that you do not pay criminals. Try flagging the email as spam/junk if you receive it multiple times. Perform a password reset as soon as possible on any accounts where you've used the password mentioned in the email. Always use a strong, separate password for important accounts, such as your email. Where available, enable two-factor authentication (2FA). Always install the latest software and app updates. Install, or enable, anti-virus software on your laptops and computers and keep it updated. If you receive one of these emails, report it to Action Fraud's phishing reporting tool. If you have received one of these emails and paid the ransom, report it to your local police force. Advice For Dog Owners We have recently seen an increase in reports of dog attacks. We would like to remind dog owners to take reasonable steps to keep your dog under control by considering the following: Consider keeping your dog on a lead in public places Ensure your dog is comfortable off a lead and will respond to your recall Use a muzzle if you are concerned about your dog in public Keep your dog on a lead when near livestock Seek advice from the local Vet Surgery if you have any concerns  It is your responsibility to ensure that your dog is under control at all times.
