School Summer Fete
Uffington Primary School summer fete will be held on Saturday 8 July in the School grounds, from 12.00 to 3.00 pm; please support it – all proceeds go to the School. Temporary Road Closure at Uffington, Broad Way - 24 July
A request has been received from Thames Water for a temporary road closure to apply to a section of Broad Way whilst essential mains repair works are carried out from 24 July 2017. The anticipated completion date is 28 July 2017. Access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles and for those frontages within the closure area, subject to the progress of the works and liaison with the works supervisor. The suggested alternative route: via High Street, Fawler Road, B4507 and vice versa.
Make a difference - Community First Responders (CFR)
South Central Ambulance Service is seeking volunteers in the local community who may be able to assist in an emergency. Below is some information about what is involved and a link to our web page.
We have CFR Schemes across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire, in both urban and rural areas. Our CFRs are trained to deliver life-saving skills such as the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), basic airway management and oxygen therapy, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR - and we always need new recruits. Because CFRs only respond to emergencies in the area where they live or work, they can arrive at the scene before an ambulance gets there. By being able to start life-saving medical treatment earlier, CFRs really do help save more lives.

The Repair Shop
Ricochet is an award-winning independent television production company, responsible for creating high quality programming for all the major broadcasters and makers of the BBC Two Series The Repair Shop. We are looking for family heirlooms and objects that have community value that have fallen into disrepair. For example: memorial plaques, eroded statues, snapped weather vanes, broken sun dials, cracked gargoyles, fading carvings, or antique village and pub signs. Objects need to be able to be taken to our workshop in Chichester to be repaired by our team of master craftspeople, so have to be transportable.
The series will follow a team of some of Britain's most passionate and skilled craftspeople as they work side by side in a beautiful barn in the West Sussex countryside fixing, repairing and breathing new life into objects brought in by members of the public. The team are a group of experts drawn from different disciplines such as furniture repairers, metal workers, mechanics, ceramicists, clock makers, picture conservationists, up-cyclers, restorers and fabricators of every ilk. Every object brought in to 'The Repair Shop' will be different, each with its own story to tell and at the end of each programme, the objects will be returned to their owners to be treasured in the family for generations to come. From the Police - Water safety
This hot weather has encouraged people to cool off in rivers, canals, ponds, quarries and lakes. Please be mindful that this can be very dangerous.
Dangers of open water: - The water may look calm on the surface, but there can be strong undercurrents that could pull even a strong swimmer under the water.
- The water may feel warm on the surface, but just a few feet below the surface it can be icy cold. The cold water can affect stamina and strength of swimmers.
Key safety tips for staying safe near water: - Alcohol and swimming do not mix! Stay out of the water if you have been drinking.
- Never let any children swim in unsupervised areas like quarries, canals or ponds.
- Never interfere with lifesaving equipment - you might need it yourself.
- Swimming anywhere other than at purpose built and supervised swimming pools is highly dangerous and is not recommended, unless as part of an organised club.
Parents please make sure your children are aware of the dangers!

Village news 20 June 2017 Richard Durrant at Baulking
There are still some tickets left for Richard's show in St. Nicholas Church on Friday 23rd June. The virtuoso guitarist will be playing his new composition Stringhenge plus a wealth of other material and he very much wanted to play here, to bring his Uffington tenor guitar back to its spiritual home. All proceeds to the Church.

Community Café
Due to a weekend away, booked last year, the Uffington Community Cafe will not be open this Saturday 25th. Apologies for that, I will be open the following week, 1st July from 11am.

Neighbourhood Plan meeting on 21 June Neighbourhood Plan meeting on Wednesday 21 June
Don't forget the public consultation meeting in Uffington Village Hall at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 21 June; refreshments will be available from 7.15 pm. The Steering Group would like to see as many residents of Uffington and Baulking as possible.
The Steering Group is approaching completion of a draft Neighbourhood Plan for our two villages; this is your best opportunity to hear about it, discuss progress to date, and to give the Steering Group your comments on the policies being proposed and the analysis behind them.
This is an important meeting for the future of our two villages - we look forward to seeing you.

Watlington Viking Hoard – 24 June
The Watlington Hoard is a collection of Viking silver, buried in the 870s and rediscovered in Watlington Oxfordshire, in 2015; more information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watlington_Hoard
If you missed the last exhibition, or would like to hear more about its discovery, you have another opportunity to do this on Saturday June 24 when selected pieces from the hoard will be popping up in Faringdon.
To coincide with its appearance, in the library from 2- 4pm, James Mather the metal detectorist who found the Hoard and David Williams FSA, Finds Liaison Officer for Surrey and East Berkshire, will be giving a public lecture at the Corn Exchange, between 12:30 and 13:30.
