Spring Litter Pick- 12/13 April. The Spring roadside litter pick will take place over the weekend 12/13 April. This date has been chosen so we will, hopefully, have some reasonable weather and before the grass verges become too overgrown and hide the litter! This is an ideal opportunity to get out in the fresh air as an individual, couple or family group, including children, and do an hour or so helping to keep the surrounding areas tidy.
The litter picking kit and 'gilets jaune' safety vests will be available from outside the Village Hall from 10am on Saturday 12th to mid-afternoon on Sunday 13th. Instructions and routes will be posted on the Hall window by the front door.
Parish Councillor Vacancy. Due to a recent resignation, the Parish Council is recruiting a replacement councillor. If you are interested in giving some time to help the Council and would be interested in becoming a councillor, please see the information here:

Annual Assembly - Monday 14th April. The Annual Assembly is, as the name suggests, an annual opportunity for the Parish Council to report on its activities over the past year and its plans for the coming year, for local organisations to talk about their activities and plans and for villagers to ask any questions. The agenda will include presentations on the canal work at Uffington Gorse by the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust and information on the new table tennis club. At the end of the presentations there will be an open forum and chance for villagers to ask any questions and make suggestions for future Council projects. Do come along for light refreshments from 6:30 before the Assembly starts at 7.00 pm.

Topping-out ceremony to mark milestone for new forensics centre for Thames Valley. Thames Valley Police and the Police and Crime Commissioner have celebrated a major milestone for our new forensics centre with a topping-out ceremony. The purpose-built centre will become the main hub for our Forensic Investigation Unit, containing laboratories, new digital technologies and dedicated training facilities. It is part of the wider Forensic Improvement Programme, which has seen significant investment to transform our forensic services, improving investigations and the outcomes for victims. Over £200,000 taken from criminals to fund crime prevention projects. Matthew Barber and Jason Hogg (Chief Constable, Thames Valley Police) have awarded £203,195 to community and voluntary organisations in the first round of this year's Community Fund. With 210 applications submitted for over £1.4m of funding, 38 organisations have successfully been awarded funding of between £250 – £10,000 to support the PCC's Police and Crime Plan key priorities.
The first round for 2025 was focused on awarding grant funding applications to projects which support work to tackle anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime across Thames Valley. Following today's announcement, Matthew said: "Amongst the wide range of applications we have focused on tackling anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime. We know these are serious concerns in our communities and by allocating over £85,000 to these 17 projects we will be working to make communities safer. I'm delighted we can take money away from criminals and make sure it supports crime reduction where it really matters, in your local community."

Uffington Lawn Tennis Club Update from Uffington Lawn Tennis Club
It feels like spring is sprung with the slightly warmer weather and sunny skies this week, and I think the week ahead looks fine too. The tennis courts are improving without the persistent damp over the winter so it's time to get out and play! To update you on a few matters...
I emailed a few weeks ago to seek volunteers for the committee, as I'm expecting a number of the existing committee to stand down this year. While I am aware of a few people who have come forward to help, I am still very keen to make sure we have a suitable mix of people, and enough people, to form a good committee going forward. Please email me if you are prepared to give up a very small amount of your time to do something good for the amazing facility we're lucky to have in our village.
Our first club night and AGM will be on Thursday 16 April starting at 6pm with some tennis on the courts, followed by the AGM at 7pm in the Sports Club facility. Please put the date in your diary and come along if you can - we need our members to support the club, now more than ever. And finally, noting a slight downturn in membership last year, to encourage more of you to sign up, including those undecided ex-members, we've decided to give an 'early bird' discount on membership fees for the first month of the season, and have reduced all our fees by 40% for April only. Grab a bargain while you can!

Saturday 22nd March, 10am - midday: Jubilee Field Spring tidy. Please come along with barrows, rakes, forks, secateurs and other useful gardening equipment to help tidy up our Jubilee Field. Many hands make light work, and there are always jobs that children can help with too. We hope to see as many people as possible to help prepare for sowing grass and flower seeds near the pond, spread wood chippings on the paths, weed around small hedge plants, collect fallen twigs and branches from the grass so that it can be mown and have a bonfire, weather permitting.

Dear All,
We are having a go at 're-imagining' the framework for our Easter Garden. We use it each year to help tell the story of Christ's Passion. Our old garden needs a bit of sprucing up, and needs some new figures too. I know how good the children are at creating things, so if you'd like to help us build something new, we are running a session after School in the Baulking aisle of St Mary's on Tuesday 25 March from 3.15 - 4.15, to do just that! You would need to bring a parent with you. We will provide craft materials and refreshments.
We will continue to build it at our Mothering Sunday Service on 30th March. Let us know verbally or via info@uffingtonbenefice.com if you'd like to come.

White Horse WI – 26 March. White Horse WI will be holding its AGM on Wednesday the 26th March at the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall at 7:30pm. This will be an opportunity to come along and vote for a new President and a committee to support her; as well as the formalities of the evening we will also be trying our hand at cupcake decorating! New members are always welcome. Refreshments and raffle will be available (cash only). We look forward to seeing you there.

Three men convicted in connection with Blenheim Palace golden toilet burglary. (This one has attracted some media interest recently, so you may be aware). Following a tireless investigation, three men have been convicted for their involvement in the theft of a £4.8m golden toilet from Blenheim Palace in 2019. From carrying out recces at the palace and booking to use the toilet itself, to planning and carrying out the theft and being involved in the sale of some of the gold afterwards. All three men were complicit.

What is the purpose of the PPG? - To give patients a voice in the development and review of services at Elm Tree Surgery.
- To offer constructive feedback and collaborate with practice staff, and to enhance care quality.
- To support the practice through change by offering advice and expertise when needed.
- To improve communication with the wider community and strengthen community integration.
What a PPG Is: A voluntary forum for registered patients to share experiences and expertise, provide feedback, and work in partnership with practice staff to improve and advocate for healthcare services in the community.
What a PPG Is Not: The PPG does not make clinical decisions, handle individual medical concerns, or replace the formal complaints procedure. It also does not interfere with professional clinical judgment.
Why Should I Join the PPG? General Practice is evolving due to government legislation, new technologies, and medical advancements. Elm Tree Surgery is actively seeking new premises and improving how we deliver care to better serve our patients. Your feedback and involvement can help shape these changes and ensure we provide the best possible service.

Car theft – Part 1. There has been a spate of car thefts in the middle of the area (Wallingford to Didcot). Those arrested have been coming down the M40 to steal. Please ask everyone please to watch out for unfamiliar vehicles and accents at strange times. Please ensure you keep your car keys hidden. If keyless entry, it's wise to keep the key in a tin or other holder that prevents radio signals (you can buy pouches). Steering locks can also protect. Please report any suspicious activity to 999 if a crime in is progress, or 101 if less urgent. There have also been pockets of antisocial behaviour, which the police are working on.
Car Theft Part 2 – From a victim. I think the most important suggestion is letting people know that the thieves are actually breaking into houses to steal the keys as keyless theft is not as easy as it was. We had a Land Rover and Land Rover have worked hard to stop keyless theft which means they have to get the keys. I just wish we had known that thieves were breaking in and stealing the keys.
