From the Vale District Council's Community Support Hub - Shielding
'From 1 August, guidance on shielding for vulnerable people will be changing as lockdown restrictions are relaxed, including the guidance on going shopping. As a result, the government is pausing its food box delivery programme. This means, there is a possibility that some more vulnerable residents, for a variety of reasons may still find themselves in need of help.
We are currently contacting all our shielded residents to get a better understanding of how many people will need support in the coming months, but it's likely we won't be able to get a true picture until after August. Your support remains vital and we wish to thank you for your ongoing commitment.
Please rest assured we are still here and the Community Hub remains in place and you can still contact us on 01235 422600 and communitysupport@southandvale.gov.uk as can residents who need help – just be aware that from 1 August, we'll only be open during normal office hours. In the coming weeks we will be preparing our services in case we have a local outbreak in our part of the country.'

Nottingham Knockers.
An Uffington resident reported a young hawker at her door yesterday, claiming to be on a young offender's programme and selling goods. These people are known colloquially as the 'Nottingham Knockers'; they are not authorised on any programme, and may well be 'casing the joint' for burglary. If one comes to your door please call the Police on 101 and give them as much detail as you can, including any information on an 'identity card'. Please then pass me the Police reference and I will follow it up.
Reminder - bonfires and nuisance smoke. We are urging people not to light bonfires at this time to protect the respiratory health of the vulnerable and to avoid unnecessary burden on the NHS. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease and smoke inhalation can impair people's breathing. In addition to this, with larger numbers of people now working from home and also looking after children, the smoke from such bonfires can cause unnecessary nuisance to your neighbours. From the Vale UBW MINIBUS ASSOCIATION AND COVID 19
The UBW Management Committee has reviewed the current suspension of services and regrettably does not feel that the time is right to resume activities. The Government advice to more senior citizens remains to take particular care to minimise contact with people outside their household, and this guidance affects most of our passengers and volunteer drivers, their health being our primary concern.
Back garden archaeology
During the Covid lockdown, local residents have been digging in the garden like perhaps never before. Have you found anything that might be archaeological, including animal bones buried deep under the grass level? Or grey, red & ochre rocks that might be from the Uffington ironstone deposit? 09333 657897 Purportedly from my internet provider telling me my internet connection would be cut within 24 hours - please call our technical advisers

Bus changes
Oxford Bus Company and Thames Travel have increased some services and increased the number of customers that can be carried on board in response to a growing demand for bus travel. - Thames Travel is now back to running its normal level of service except for night buses.
- Most Oxford City services are now operating at least every 10-12 minutes on Mondays to Saturdays.
- Park&Ride is also operating frequently with service 300 now operating up to every 12 minutes, the 400 up to every 15 minutes and the 500 up to every 30 minutes.
- The Airline service will also return to serving both Heathrow and Gatwick airports from Sunday. Services between Oxford and Heathrow Airport will operate hourly throughout the day and a service to Gatwick Airport will run every two hours.
- All buses and coaches are now able to carry between 45% and 60% of the normal seating capacity with one customer per row of seating now allowed. All rearward facing seats have been taken out of use to avoid customers sitting face to face and the ability to travel whilst standing on vehicles has been temporarily removed.
- Face coverings should be worn if customers are able to.

County Council helpline to continue operating. As the lockdown eases, vulnerable people who have needed to shield during the lockdown will still be able to get help, as the helpline is set to continue running (as councils prepare in case of a second wave of Covid-19 in the autumn/winter). The Director of Customer and Culture for the County Council explained that some things would change; for example food parcels which had been delivered by council staff would now instead come directly from supermarkets. He also said that as the track and trace system develops, different kinds of people might need help from the support line instead.
The County Shielding helpline number is 01865 897820 for residents outside Oxford City.

Faringdon Food Bank
Faringdon Food Bank have been overwhelmed by the support they have received during the pandemic and wish to offer a big thank you to the community. However, they no longer need donations of any kind, so collections are suspended until the need arises in the future.
Congratulations and many thanks to Elizabeth Erskine for setting up this initiative.
Road safety - summer holidays
A young teenager in the village came very close to being knocked off his bike earlier this week, by a local resident who pulled out into the road in a car, without looking. Whilst the majority of children and adults wear helmets not all will wear hi-vis jackets when they are on social rides or playing with friends around the village. Many adults in cars look out for other adults but forget that there are many children in the village that are not as skilled or experienced (or large) on their bikes and have enjoyed being out on their bikes for months now without having to worry about cars.
Please take extra care, so that the village is safe and accessible for everyone, particularly during the summer holidays.

The Village Hall Committee has put temporary emergency arrangements in place for the re-opening post lockdown and provided a risk assessment for hirers to complete. It is understood that provided the weather is fine on Sunday, all stalls and the cafe will operate in the car park and the only access to the hall will be for the cafe staff who will use the kitchen and for the public to use the toilets (which will be restricted). If the weather is wet, and the market goes ahead, other arrangements will apply.
Firewood available – Jubilee Field
All Seasons Tree Solutions have cut down a damaged willow between the High Street and the pond on behalf of the Parish Council, and there remains a quantity of firewood, on a first come first served basis.
Mindfulness sessions in St Mary's
We will be starting a weekly half-hour session on Mindfulness in St Mary's on Thursdays at 11am, beginning 30th July. This is aimed at anyone who is now working from home and finding the work-home balance, within the same four walls, a bit monotonous. It will be a half hour to re-charge during the working day, and we will look at the benefits of meditation whilst benefitting from the peace of an ancient building. Road Closure Notice - Kingston Lisle, Fawler Road (Fawler Hill) – 17 August
To facilitate carriageway resurfacing and drainage works, from 17 August 2020 to the anticipated completion date of 21 August 2020 (date included). This is a 24 hour road closure. Limited access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles and for frontages within the closed section of road, subject to the progress of the works
SUGGESTED ALTERNATIVE ROUTE: via Follow unnamed road from Fawler Road to B4507 at Blowing Stone Hill, continue right on B4507 to turn right to The Broadway, Follow the Broadway through Woolstone to Uffington. Turn right on Broad Street, Uffington and follow to Fawler Road, Uffington, where straight on to closure point; and vice versa.
